Gleaner uses the same term to describe the first shaft rear of the engine, driving everything. BTW, I"m always impressed at your knowledge of so much equipment, your workload, and your willingness to spend so much time here to help so many. Granted, I don"t share your negative view on ethanol....LOL....but you are a very positive influence on these boards, benefiting many by sharing what you have learned. And most of all......as a fellow Veteran I"ve always appreciated and respected your comments about serving us and US.
 
I kind of figured it was a different terminology issue. It drives me nuts when the same brand of equipment changes terms when different engineers design different models. An example is the hour meter/tachometer. It is call that in some models and called a speed hour meter in others. In a paper parts book it is not an issue as you can page through and find what you need. In a computer record it makes you look like a sub trained monkey at times.
 
Manufacturers often end up hiring technical writers who use the verbage given to them by the company engineers, therefore the difference in terminalolgy in the manuals between companies (and even between models in some comopanies, depending on different engineers).
 
I've replaced the PTO clutch packs in them in the wheat stubble under the 100+ degree sun several times. The clutch pack is about the same as the one in a 1086 tractor only it has to hold 300+ horses in a 2388. We couldn't get the idea into some of the young combine operator's heads to idle the engine before they engage it. And DON'T rev it and engage the clutch to try to unslug the rotor!!!!. Jim
 
I have wondered the same thing about my 1680's. Both of them leak and we put a replacement motor in one, and the engine we took out was leaking also. Must be a weak spot on them. I think there is a special tool of some kind that is needed to replace the seal. Also I think someone told me a speedi-sleeve (not sure if that is what they are called) is usually required because the crankshaft will be worn little bit. I, too, will be waiting for some more responses because I need to do my 1680's.
