I just got a Case 40 powerloader. The serial number says it is a 1955 Case 400 series, but it came form the factory with the loader. Parts of it look more like a "D". Does anyone know anything about this model?

as jim said model "40" Power Loaders were on a "DI" chassis model "30" were on a "SI" and the model "50" was first designed on the "LAI" unit but the model "500" was released before the Power Loaders so it came on the Industrial version of the "500"

Hey CNT... did they ever make a power steering unit that went on the DI? I have a 40 loader on mine and, well, the steering could use some help when you get the bucket full. Maybe the concrete weights on the back would help too but... wow... :)

Thanks

Ken, I have seen one with factory power steering I wish I had bought that one was all original paint and all it would steer easy sitting still

I:ve got a 30 and 40.. Love both of them! Will pick up alot more than a standard tractor loader wi11. Just wish they had power steering. LOL

Any idea how they did the PS? I'm wondering on both the pump and how it drove the steering... not a lot of room on a DI with a loader...

Thanks!

it was tied in with the pump for the loader and was a torque motor right under the steering wheel, the tractor had original paint and the unit was painted must have been a very later production one I have never seen another like it the torque motor was about the size of a PTO hyd pump like on a farmhand loader it worked very well you could spin the wheel sitting still with a load on it

What year is your tractor? Does it have 400 series running gear and engine? Mine is a 4 speed while other 400 series are all 8 speed!

Great pictures. My serial number shows it's a 400 series but it's a 4 speed and the air cleaner looks like a DI! Would it be possible to get a PDF of the book where you got the pictures? I want to restore mine. Thanks for posting the pics! Gives me an idea of what it looked like!

The serial number is 8069084 and the model# is 40. I'm trying to figure out how to post a picture. Heres a pic my wife took of me trying to steer the beast before I greased it! It has a 4 speed transmission, and the air cleaner is the giant cast iron unit i've seen on the D. I just bought a manual for a 400 series but I haven't gotten it yet and wonder what parts are 400 and what parts might be D.

the serial does com up as a 1955 Case did a lot of "carry over" especially with construction stuff the only 4 speed big "400" I have ever seen had a shuttle as well does your tractor have one shift lever that shifts to the right/left or two sticks that shift up and down? a DI shifts right to left for gear selection also the DI will have a cast iron grill with CASE cast in running up and down a 400 has a tin grill hope this helps

My Case shifts side to side. Someone put a car rad in it but I have the original cast iron unit. I didn't get a grill with it, only a shutter unit.

The D and 400 series were completely different machines in just about every part. The 400 is also a lot bigger than a D. They made VAI's after regular VAC production ended so I don't see why they wouldn't have made some DI's later either. Either way with the fate of most construction machinery it is somewhat rare because a lot of if gets beats to death and scrapped. Do you have any closer side photos?
