Case 411 Gear Selector hard to use

takes time. i had to cut grade 8 bolts and grind heads square to fit the shift lever grooves and took most of the side play,twist away making gear hunt much easier. new pins wouldnt fit my housing but the shank on longer bolt fit nice so i used grinder ,time,oil and patience.dip the bolts in oil every little bit while grinding the square heads

IMHO, Oliver used a much better shift diagram to show the double stacked H than was used on the 400.

For me it is easier to imagine with my eyes closed. In neutral you can easily feel if it is in low range or high range. From there it is:

R 3 1

in both low range and high range (5, 6, 7, 8, R2).
