I bought a working (the plackard says 440h) case, I cannot find any thing that referances a 440h. I know it is real because it is on my property. I want to restore it if I can find information about it. Thanks Rocky

The 440 is a gas engine utility model tractor in the 430 line (148 cid engine). It should have 24" wheels I believe and probably an underneath muffler. The h means it has a high speed road gear. Its is also a dry clutch model probably with triple range drive as the COM version would be a 440C.

What you have is a Case 430 in the utility configuration with a gas (spark ignition) engine, and a high speed road gear.

440H

The first number indicates the model: "4" = 430 series

The second number indicates the engine: "4" = 148 ci Spark Ignition; "3" = 188 ci diesel

The third number indicates the configuration: "0" Utility, and "1" General Purpose (row crop)

the trailing "H" or "L" indicate non-standard gearing (low or high speed)

Hey Jim

I don't think Case aver made a 430 Case-o-matic. Only the 530 and 630 were available with the "slip-o-matic" transmission.

Has winter arrived down your way yet? Those brisk 65-70 degree days must make a guy long for summer... :-) It snowed here this week...dang I hate winter.

Joe, you are right, I was just thinking 30 series in general and forgot that Case didn't put the COM in the 430 series.

From your post above I see your are working on the power steering unit. How did it look when you got it? The tie rods I got from the person were a bit rusty but I am soaking the long ends on the barrel and will get them out. Once out I will bead blast them and paint. Hope your parts came in good shape.

I keep looking and will find a Char-Lynn unit for the 630 one day. Walt Davies put a link to Messick's CaseIH in a few days ago and I notice the unit is still available for the 630 BUT is rather pricy. It would cost more by the time I added shipping than I paid for my tractor so for now I will stick to good ole Armstrong steering.

Keep me informed on your progress I am intersted in the ups AND downs for maybe a future addition of my own, you have my e-mail.

The power steering system was mostly complete. Unfortunately, the dude took a "gas ax" to one of the needed steering shafts and cut the universal joint end off of one end. I'll need to take my old shaft to a machine shop and have them cut it to the correct length; then cut a woodruff key-way and a hole for a roll pin. Other than that, the system is complete. I'll probably need to make new steel lines, but having the old ones for a pattern will be helpful. The steering motor and pump are both rough externally, but actaully seem to function well. We'll see....putting on the old girl is probably a little overkill, but what the heck....

Good luck with the 630 PS search. It seems like some of this stuff is rare as common sense in Washington.... - Joe
