case 800 diesel

i have a 800 case-o-matic diesel...it will start right up on ether but not on diesel. i just bought it and was told it was a barn tractor and had sat for 10-12 years. i would like to use it but don't know where to go from here. this is my first diesel tractor. thanks for any advice or suggestions

The compression is low. It could be due to it sitting up or high hours or it could have been run low of oil at one time or any number of things but If it is the sitting that has caused it; it may improve after it"s run. It"s harder to do with a diesel becuase you have to pull the injectors to do it which can open Pandora"s box but if you could shoot some Marvel Mystery oil into the cylinders and turn it over, it would help some. How cold was it when you were trying to start it with ether? Some diesel engines are designed to start on ether when it"s cold. If it has to have ether when the engine is warm then it probably needs to be overhauled or at least a set of rings. Have fun!

Stay away from the either, they become addicted easy. Did you drain the old fuel and put in new? Run it awhile with good fuel, then try restarting
it. Once addicted it's time for engine oerhaul.

i live in arizona and tried to start it the first time in warmer weather. only to see if it would start like the seller said it would. i have since bought all the filters for it thinking it might be clogged from sitting. haven't tried to start it again since i was told years ago that ether wasn't good for it. i'm not sure if i need to bleed it or how to do that or if there is another way to proceed
. but thank you for the reply

The Rack in side the pump is Stuck !Had a 970 that sat for 9 years That was stuck WIDE OPEN [ It pegged the Tac! thought It was Going to BLOW UP Before I could get it Stopped !When it came Un stuck back to 500 rpm.that will surly make your Hair stand on end !

I can only assume that you are aware there is a pre-heater on your tractor. By turning the igination key to the left and holding it for about 30 seconds will aid in starting. This is for cold weather, but it might help.

I was wondering when some one would hit the nail on the head, I had a 700B do the same thing pegged the tach I jumped on it groung it into gear held the brakes and killed it and yes my hair was on end for sure

Maybe true? BUT I have used Starting Fluid for thirty years. NO PROBLEMS. 8500hrs. and runs smooth, plenty of power 45 lb. oil pressure uses no oil . Needs a overhaul? Probabley won't hurt.

First I would bleed the system. Make sure you have fuel to the injection pump. Then I would check to make sure the rack isn't stuck, then try to start it. If you need more help just ask again. Let us know what happens.

Everyone here is jumping the gun. Since has sat a long time and more than likely has bad fiel in it, I would change out the filters, and put it to work, with fresh fuel and see how it acts. Give it a chanch to limber up again.

youre all on the rite track , change filters and fuel and put that gal thru some easy paces at 1st and let her limber up good before you work her hard ,If it were mine, I would Use Lucas fuel stabilizer in the fuel , and lucas Engine oil additive to RESEAT THE RINGS , DO NOT BE AFRAID TO GT BACK TO US . do not tinker with the pump internals,, most seasoned diesel owners will not touch them , leavin that to the professional shop , THATS IT PERIOD !. if all that has been done and you are experiencing a ratty start and mifires so bad that blows off the muffler and yet she still runs (Guess HOW I KNOW? ) BUT HORRIBLE.!.then, THE FUEL PUMP IS OUT OF TIME,?, Maybe or other problems ?, for example ,You could have sticky valves , But that is more likely on Gassers . and that will require a lot of help from the best gurus here . AGAIN < DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK! , No one , that has above a 5th grader mentality is gonna make you feel stupid , AND IF THEY do ,Then You KNOW they are still in the 5th Grade.and you will have to deal with them as a adult .. ,LOL , REALLY, the CASE board is a Great helpful Bunch ,.. for entertainment , Go over to jDeere if You want to watch a few 5th grade bullies wrestle.. LOL.. I am gonna have to pull my 800s pump and send it to a shop because it is letting fuel in the oil ,, dreading the job because of the halewe went thru trying to get the pump properly timed after another shop fixed the leak and charged me $600.. thought we had engine perfectly set and timed .. i will need coaching from those same Gurus , To avoid all that timing mess again ,,.

Maybe not standard ,??? but ,there is a plug that can be replaced in the manifold with the same type glow plug heater that is in my 1070,, if i had one i would intall it.. what would it hurt ?

Ya know, there are a lot of good answers here, but on mine, the decompression lever was turned. It took me about 3 tries before I could get it to start. Finally started playing with levers and got it to fire right up. Of course I bought mine on an auction, and still have never seen a book on it.

I'm not sure what happens after you take the ether away. Will it stay running or will it stall? Obviously if it stays running you are getting fuel. The 800 fuel system is difficult to bleed, and yes, ether is harmful to the CASE diesel.

One can use the decompression to stop engine run away on the 100 and early 30 series tractors if the rod is not froze.

What is starting in warmer weather? Mine starts right up (usually within the first revolution) if it is above 50F, but if it is below 35 to 40F I usually need either.

Mr. Salie, how much harm does either do? My manual, which you can still get from Case, shows using an either attachment for cold weather starting. I knew that either was bad for newer engines but I thought not as bad for the older engines.

John..you say either is hard on case engines.. I agree that misuse of either will be bad. As I said I have used either for thirty years on my 930. I replaced the heater with a pipe that I squirt either into, BUT I never use it until the engine is turning over and begining to smoke a little and than I use it sparingly. My 2390, 2590,4690, and my 9230 came with the either canister mounted and run by a electric button.

Before you remove the pump remove the long nut on the front of the pump, the one with the 3/4 flats that covers the end of the rack and see if the rack moves freely in and out, it should respond to throttle position and if it is stuck often a little pressure or gentle tapping on it may unstick it. If it is stuck get it working very free if possible before trying to start it as if it sticks in the wide open position it will run away. Be sure the decompressor is in working order and be close to it just in case. These pumps are anything but fragile but rust or varnish will stick the rack.
