Case 831C Transmission

I have about a 1964 831C with a Case-O-Matic tranny. I"ve had it for about 5 years but never got a manual for it. There is a lever on the left side of the steering column that makes it go faster when I pull it toward me. I don"t recall that it was necessary to pull this lever toward me in order to make the tractor move forward at all but lately that has been the case. When I checked the dip stick in front of the clutch box, the level was below the "Add" mark. Could this be the problem? If so, what type of fluid goes there? Thanks and have a sweet CHRISTmas.

The lever on the right of the steering wheel is the throttle, and yes when pulled toward you makes it go faster. It does the same thing as the foot feed but holds it in that position where as the foot feed has a spring return like your pick up.

There should be another lever on the right of the stering wheel that is the torque converter lock up or direct drive that you pull down when plowing, disking etc. In COM (right lever in the up position)to make the tractor go just give it more throttle to stop just step on the brakes just like an automatic transmission. The "clutch" pedal really isn't a clutch its a hydraulic valve that blocks flow to completely stop and shift gears.

There are many more nuances to using the Case-O-Matic properly but requires a lot of explanation and you should get an operators manual.

Add Case Hytran to the fill area under the dip stick if it is the hydraulics dipstick and not the engine.

Don't put to much stock in the message from JGarner below. I think he got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning! If your tractor is a 64 the throttle is on the left. The COM lever IS on the left side of the steering column, and you pull it UP to lock up the converter after the tractor is up to speed. The oil in the converter MUST be checked within a minute of stopping the engine. If you wait longer the oil will be draining out of the torque converter and the oil will show higher on the dip stick than it actually is. I am sure there will be other comments here.

We just got a 831 diesel and need a radiator for it.It sounded to me like you know this tractor and could maybe help. thanks

I would bet John Saeli could get you a new radiator for the 830. As well, if you are near a larger town with a big radiator shop you can have yours recored if your tanks and mounting tin are in OK shape. I had to repair one of my mounts but the tanks were OK on my 630 so I got it recored. I could not find a new replacement for the 630 anywhere but the 830s were made for 10 years whereas the 630 only 4. Before you commit to a recore, get a price on it and a new radiator. They had to make a new core for my 630 and the job was about the same price as a new radiator for other Case models.

I have seen replacements for the 830 in a few places.

My bad, my typing fingers don't know right from left, and I looked at the Case parts site to see what side the COM lever was on. From what I could tell it looked like on the right like the smaller models.

As well, I wanted to make sure I didn't tell Walter didn't put Hytran in his crakcase as I couldn't remember which side the engine dipstick was on on our 831 dual range, its been a few years.

Guess the answer did sound pretty condesending, which wasn't my intention, typed this early in the morning. Many appologies to all of you on the forum if my post didn't read like I was thinking.

About two years ago while I was bushhogging the lower forty, one of the fan blades on my 831C came flying off, tearing up the radiator in the process. An inspection showed that the other blades had serious stress cracks just above the bolts. In other words, all of them were about to come flying off. Some kind soul on this site sent me another one with no stress cracks. You might want to check yours while you're at it. My radiator man said the tanks were too rotten to make a repair feasible. I got estimates anywhere from $350 to $650 for a new radiator. Noboby had a good used one in any of the approximately 100 major tractor salvage yards scattered around this country. The $350 one works just fine. Can't remember where I found it but I might be able to find the receipt if you want me to.

Hey, don't worry about it. I figured something like that must have happened. You had the best of intentions. But the road to hell is paved with good intentions. JUST KIDDING!!! JUST KIDDING!!! Hope you and yours have a most blessed and wonderful CHRISTmas.
