Case 970, power shift or standard?

My neighbor asked me if I could find out which is better. He might need to get another tractor because the injection pump is gone on his IH 706 and he's not sure if more is wrong as well. He found a place that has 2 Case 970's. One powershift, one standard. Someone else told him to stay away from the powershift. The P/S is listed for $8500 and the standard for $7500. Sorry it doesn't say what year or anything else, just Case 970. I think one of them has 6100 hrs. but not sure. The prices seems a little high to me but I don't know about Case tractors. He wants it for round baling and a loader. Thanks for your help. Dave

he won't like the 8 speed if he has a rd. baler that you have to back up before you eject the bale, p.s. isn't near as bad as everybody makes them out to be, I laugh at the IH guys who bash Case's p.s., no body built a bigger p.o.s. than the IH torque!

The only place the 8 speed would be better is doing heavy tillage work. My 970 is a 8 speed and I wish it was a PS. Mine has just short of 10,000 hours on it, and the shifter is so tight it shifts hard. I have a 2090 with a PS transmission and I love it. The only trouble I have had with it is when a snap ring came out of the PTO clutch, and the entire PTO clutch pack was ground up into the rear end. The only thing I do not like about the PS is that reverse is to fast. Reverse is the same speed as the highest PS speed in each gear, and it should be the same as the slowest. A good example of the engineers designing the tractors, and not having to drive them.

Hi Doug, It was good to spend a few minutes with you at Prarie Village, Family constraints kept me going that day so time was at a premium. I just about come apart at the seams everytime someone knocks on the rps34 (or the Case-o for that matter) transmission. They are more versitile than a TA, much more durable and most failures are direcrly traceable to poor or total lack of servicing trans filters and trans oil changes. just stick a pilot spool and keep useing it, naturally it will destroy itself as will anyone elses transmission. I just chock it up to people having limited or no knowledge of the transmissions and just passing on what they have heard from somebody who talked to somebody else and on and on. certainly they have never been around them. mEl

Hey there, I own 2 970's...one is a ps one is a standard. First of all....I agree with all the replies so far....however...for your nieghbor not owning either before...I have to say I would steer him towards the standard. Both are good...but I would always steer a case beginer towards the 8 speed....even though the ps is good...they all have quirks to them.
--just my input.

The guy selling it isnt asking alot for it .is it a ok donor as a tractor pull ?is the powershift strong and or relitively easy to repair ?

That tractor is an 8spd transmission, not the power shift. 8spd is Good transmission for pulling, will hold allot of HP without much upgrading.

Thanks for that .just spoke to a other knowledgable person that thought the same .power shift isnt a big deal if repowering one ?they have a conventional flywheel and clutch ?or torque convertor type arrangement ?I totally new to them

They have a set tension torque limiter, no release mechanism, A power shift will hold with a reasonable amount of HP increase but the TL will have to be stiffened up for even a modest power increase, one we had set up for pulling we screwed the TL plate fast to the flywheel. If you were going to the bigger smoker classes the Power Shift is out of the question due to the way those engines are set up to be run because of the way they have to be loaded against a slipping clutch to make initial boost. The reason I elaborate on that is the reference to a donor for pulling comment. maybe someone else has something to add. If you are looking down the road as a serious puller 8 speed is the way to go, there are gear sets being made for the dual range box the puts gears in faster than normal 8th.

Thanks for that .I am new to the sport .have a 671 in a fergy.just brought a 12v71 engine .that case was selling pretty cheap .but thought I best do some research
