CASE D motor specs.

We just purchased what I believe to be a 1940 (?) Case Model D. I'm interested in trying to find some of the motor specifications. Also, any info. for sources for parts, etc. would be helpful as this is the first case we have bought.

Would the Desert Sand/Flambeau Red be the correct color scheme for this model/year? Would this have been a six or twelve volt system? Live PTO? Three speed plus reverse?

Sorry so many questions! Thanks for any help.

If it still has the serial number plate on the dash take the first two digits and subtract 4 this will give you the year. you're 1940 tractor serial number would start with 44*****. Check E-BAY for owners manual you will need one.

Brian;

1940 D would be all Flambeau red with accessories painted black to your taste.

Electrical system was originally 6 volt with negative ground. Does not have live pto and early models were 3 speed and later were 4 speed. If the tractor was originally shipped on steel wheels, 4th gear will be locked out if a 4 speed.

Where are you located? There are members on this board who can help with many parts. Jonh Saeli in New York, Don Livingston in Minnesota, Dave Reed in Maryland and Joe Peeper in Oklahoma, just to name a few... Gene

Yesterday's Tractors sells a service manual for it on this web site. Click on Tractor Manuals under Marketplace.

If you need immediate info, your local library should have a file of Motor's Truck and Tractor manuals; my 50 issue covers D's to 49, and you can usually xerox pages if you need to take info home until a real manual comes. HTH.

Thanks for the reply! As someone who has 4 John Deere(s) & an Allis-Chalmers, I'm a little embarrassed about how little I know about this Case.

First, based on your reply I re-checked the serial# which seemed to be a digit short, and after a little scratching realized I missed the leading digit, which was a (5). So the entire number is 5413797D. I guess that makes it a 1950 model?

I knew the motor was setup when we bought it, but what I didn't know was that some of the valve cover bolts, the valve tappit bolts, and the push-rods were all MIA! I have looked at the crank which seem to look good. Is my best option to disconnect and drive pistons up through the top or is there a secret to loosening it up?? We were able to free up our Allis after some soaking and trying some different ways to move the pistons.

Does this change your thoughts on some of the other questions?? I'm located in the far Northeast corner of NYS, 15 miles from VT & Canadian border(s).

Thanks for any suggestions!!

Brian T.
