Case IH 8420

Since the NH 570 went down as I was baling, I've been looking for a cheap backup machine. I also would like to have a roller for when I've got some less do than diserable hay to bale or trying to beat some rain. Found his bale about 3 and half hours away. Here's the craigslist ad:

Case 8420 round baler ( same as a Hesston) makes a 39"x52 bale, electric tie, has 4 brand new springs on it, new pick up belt, has baled 90 bales this year, I have owned it for 15 yrs , always shedded, greased , and maintained . A 35 horse tractor will run it , ready to bale, $4200 call or text show contact info

I know it's he same as a couple of the Hesston balers 530, 730, and he MF 1734. It's got the electric tie option. I've read some of he older post about the twine cutter not working the best, was this still a problem with the electric tie option? Anything else to worry about? I know it's a small roll, but I sell a lot of hay so that's a plus for me, and I've got a market for the small rolls. Any problem with towing it home that far? What abut the bolt pattern on the rim, would really like to take a couple of spares with me...

Oh, he's asking $4200. Baler looks good, always been shedded. Belts look good,. How do these balers do in finer/smaller grass hay, like 2nd and 3rd cutting??

The springs he mentions are $130 each. If you buy it, see if he still has the old springs available for spares, etc. Not a bad price, there is one here in NC for sale for $3,500, but it has manual tie. I have an 8420 and have had no problem with twine cutter, it has electric threader. The first version of this baler was Hesston 5530 and the twine cutter and twine tube were different. The early system works but is a little more 'finicky'. I have a 5530 also and maintain three 530 for folks. For some reason maximum diameter on my rolls are about 48 inches. The rolls will bring just as much as a true 4'x4' roll. Simple balers to work on. They do a fair job on shorter/second cutting grass, I put plenty of twine on the shorter stuff. There is a removable bar in the bale chamber that is supposed to help with shorter hay when installed.

Also, it should tow that far with no problem, if the tires are good. Bolt pattern is same as a lot of front tractor tires, I think. Six lug and big center hole.

I've got the 530 hesston that my dad bought new 26 years ago. Manual tie, works alright if you need the knife sharp and the mechanism well greased. Large center 5 bolt rims. Mine has one from a ford truck on it.

Casey,
I was totally wrong on the lug size etc! It is a 5 lug x 5 1/2 inch bolt circle with the larger center like the old Jeeps. Ford trucks had the same bolt circle as has been mentioned, with a slightly smaller center.

I made 96 rolls with my 5530 this afternoon. This was off of about 11 acres. It took me 4 1/2 hours to roll it.
