I just bought Case LA and a LAE power unit. The old man I bought it from told me if I was going to pull it I should put the power unit motor in the Tractor because the power units had dome pistons. Is this true?

Power units as well as tractors could have almost any combination of Pistons and heads. If the power unit is LP gas, it will have a higher compression and governed speed. Many power units were governed at 1400 rpm.
Before I made any major changes, I would check bore size and the head casting number.
Aftermarket kits were available in 4 3/4 and 4 7/8 inch bore size. Pistons may be recessed, flat with top of block or domed into the low compression head.
My LA runs flat top pistons and an LP head for about 8.0 to 1 compression ratio and about 90 horsepower. Has a 5845A propane head... Gene

Typical bare weight of a LA is about 7000 lbs. I have seen them pulling in 5000 lbs. Replacing the heavy front and rear wheel centers with special hubs will shed more than 2000 Lbs. Aluminum rear cover replacing the PTO will save around a hundred.
Original 30 inch tires are replaced with 34's for serious pullers.
These engines have been built out to 1100 cubic inches, but is veerrry expensive... Gene

I have LP High ccompression 4.625 pistons an LP head and have changed my RPM on the governor to 1600 so it pulls fairly good but I'm running way to much weight as I want to keep the outside look of the tractor stock. Last weigh in was around 8,975 I also run rear tires full to fill cap with water and a little antifreeze.
I'm sure that it would pull a lot better with less weight in a lower class but I don't think that is really fair to the other smaller tractors with much less engine in them. You can get a lot out of these old LA's but it takes money something I seem to be a bit short of right now.
