Case magneto

Have a flange mount Case mag. Has no spark. Coil looks split and had moisture around it. Thinking coil bad as getting 9k to case. How do you remove coil? Has no screw to hold it in like Fm's. Guessing it is of a D.

I think maybe the early Case magnetos on the S and D series tractors required a gear puller to remove the coil. I don't think you can buy a replacement coil. There are companies that rewind them. Probably the best thing to do is buy another magneto, see link.

I remember my good friend Rudy Calin telling me that the Case coils are pretty much unreplaceable. Something with how the coil bar is sort of infused or intertwined within it... Anyhow, I would give him a look-see. you can find him on google if you search his name and "rebuiltmags". Great guy, and loves his work (that is all he does is magnetos).

Best bet is to get an right-angle (upright) Delco distributor off of an H or M Farmall or an Allis Chalmers of the same vintage and convert it to battery ignition, as parts for a Case mag are nearly impossible to find. The right-angle Delco distributor will bolt right up to a SC or DC and will give you lots of room for the oil filter. They work good and internal parts are easily available. I should restate my previous comment - the coils are not un-replaceable, but rather more they are un-serviceable. The coil bar that is in the center of the coil is essentially waffled, or weaved with the coil itself. Over time, the two items generally fuse together and become one - making itnearly impossible to have the coil rebuilt/rewound. I know that my friend Rudy did just fall upon of NOS Case coils. Again, I would give him a call to see what he thinks. He never ceases to amaze me with his knowledge - magnetos are his life.

If all else fails, I believe a magneto off of an H or M farmall (IHC H4 Magneto) will work just fie and they are much more readily available and easy to find parts for..

If you have the 4JMA magneto. The coil bar is pressed into the housing. A special tool is need to pull the coil. Some magnetos the bar has rusted to the point that it will not come out with wrecking the body or the coil bar.

There are magneto shops that will rebuild your old coil. They come with a price. Mcdonaldcarb.com can rewind your coil. There are a number of other magnetos that will fit the Case tractors. The Farmall H4 for a gasoline H or M. Fairbanks Mores for an AC WC or WD. Several Wicos out there.

If you buy an IH magneto. make sure it is the RH model for the gasoline tractors, A,B,C,H,or M. A magneto for a MD WD6 WD9 or W-9 will work as they turn LH.

I have been watching ebay for years for Case Mag parts for my tractor. I currently have NOS distributor cap, Points with fiber cam, two impulse springs, and one complete Impulse with spring and paw plate. Have been watching for a rotors and condensers.

Better explained, sir! I only know a little bit from what I have learned from friends on these magnetos (I hate electrical)... But I know that the 4JMA is a pretty good mag when operational. The later model Case mags (model after the 4JMA) are a little better and improved - at least that is my understanding. I can't remember the model number, but it is a full, one piece mag body instead of being a 2-piece like the 4JMA.

One piece body. Have repaired lots of mags but nothing like this. Fairbanks similar in ways. Cap good,points,rotor ok. Insulation split and corrosion. Coils hard to check unless you can ring them. Just don't like lower reading to chassis. Great design!

one piece body is a model 41. coil is removed by removing two wedges, one on each side. use a small crowfoot.

Tried pulling the wedges. Scared of breaking housing.
