Looking for some help to install a magneto on the Case 1948 SC tractor. is their something on CaseIH or can someone help with timing and spark plug wire position, cap to plug.

V and J, you really need a service manual. However, the procedure is as follows.
1) Remove sparkplug on cylinder #1 and the pipe plug at crankshaft level on right side of the bell housing.
2) Rotate engine until cyl#1 is coming up on compression stroke and look through pipe plug hole for a large (3/16" diameter) punch mark on the flywheel. Center this mark in the hole.
3) Locate the #1 cylinder lug on the magneto distributor cap (should be upper right when viewed from the rear of the tractor), and rotate magneto impulse with a wrench until the magneto impulse is about to snap with the distributor disc (internal) pointed at this lug. You can determine that the disc is pointed at this lug by connecting a wire and plug to this lug (with the plug grounded to the magneto), and then turning the impulse with the wrench through 4 snaps of the impulse (wear heavy gloves). The spark should be strongest when the disc is pointed at the lug. After the strongest spark occurs, then rotate the magneto through 3 more impulse clicks and you are done.
4) Install the magneto on the tractor, being careful not to rotate the impulse. Then rotate the entire magneto slowly clockwise until the impulse trips, and tighten down the magneto.
5) Install the plug wires in the order which is cast into the cylinder head (1-3-4-2), starting at #1 and working clockwise around the cap.

The above assumes that everything is timed right both inside the magneto and the tractor.

Thank You Chris for the good information. We need to locate a manual for the tractor. I try to keep one for all the machinery. This is our newest restoration but it's a good pick for the job. Thnx V and J.

Christopher has it right. A service manual is best but for timing the mag, the owner's manual has all that information also. If you'd like, I could scan the pages and send them to you? Owner's manuals aren't hard to come by.

I've got a Owner's Manual dated 1944 for your tractor. There are no real changes in the tractor until the live power units in '51. This is an interesting manual, it's 40 pages longer then a 1950 manual I have, with engine and transmission disassembly. It's a lot more inclusive than the later ones and is a mini shop manual. It's well used with a dirty cover, but very intact and legible. If you want it let me know, $5 for postage and it will be on the way. Mail is open, let me know, with an address

The manual would be great to have for the repair project, please send me your address, i will send you the shipping. Thnx V and J

I see from some of the spec sheets this tractor uses a 6V battery to turn the starter. But unsure on the battery hookup, is this Positive ground setup?

It was definitely negative ground when it left the factory. DCs and SCs came from the Racine plant and were 6V negative ground. VACs came from the Rock Island plant and were 6V positive ground.

Larry, Postage and address is in the Wednesday morning mail,Thank You. Need to get her smokin to move some firewood, season is here. I was out in New Prague and LeCenter in the spring, great farm country out their.

Will use a Wico XH894 magneto, need to locate some tires 10-38 rears. Firewood needed, gotta get her smokin to haul some in.

Setup tractor timing. Rolled #1 piston up on compression stroke, both valves closed with #4 exhaust closed and center punch in hole. Timed mag using a plug and wire to upper right cap location. Mag will not install to tractor lug plate, cannot rotate mag enough to make connection (hits engine block)? Would almost seem like the trip lug on the inside of the mag trip plate needs to be rotated about 30 degrees? It has 4 screws that secure the collar. Can this be collar be rotated, it has notch markings for what would appear to alter degrees.

Rolled her over to No.1 on compression stroke, both valves closed with No. 4 exhaust closed with center punch on flywheel in the plug hole. Rotated a Wico XH894 mag to No. 1, actually has a window with a white line for timing. Something doesn't seem quite right, cannot rotate mag enough to make connection with lug plate on tractor, mag hits engine block. Almost seems like engine has to be rolled one direction or the other to make the connection. Does No.1 fire on TDC or is it past and on the down stroke?

While everyone is correct in their timing procedure description I always find TDC on #1 cyl then back the engine up a good bit, fire the mag on #1 then back it up till it is approaching firing on #1 post again then installing it, that way you don't have to fight impulse spring windup. Once the coupling is made and the bolts in place you can do the TDC timing easily as the other posters described. This method makes the fighting of that impulse a thing of the past.

Need to give that procedure a try, had that thought in mind on the first try. I noticed the flywheel has other marks on it besides the drilled notch which is TDC, appeared to be other letters, possibly degree changes?
