Hey i hav a case sc that when it try to start it just smokes and every once in a while it will pop i was wondering what would cause this. Magneto?

i had one do that after i replaced wires and as careful as i was i got them one post off. might check thatif you've done any work or maybe it jumped a gear in the timing.

Could be a number of things.
1. Do you smell gas or see it dripping from the carb? If you do thats OK - it confirms you have gas where you need it.
2. Check timing by removing a plug and checking for spark at the time you have compression in that cylinder.
3. If this tractor has not been run in a while you also could have some valves hanging up. Remove valve cover and check that all the valves are moving.
The SC is pretty simple so it should be fairly easy to troubleshoot.

YA i check all of that stuff and thanks but i noticed that the plugs only spark about maybe 20% of the time when the spark they have a good spark why would it do that thanks

after trying all what everyone is saying , check the manifold for cracks and burn outs and rust holes to make sure they are not sharing gases

If your getting intermitent spark - its either the wires or the mag.
Have you taken the cover off the mag.?
Check for moisture, wipe it all out to get rid of any dust or crud etc. Also check the cover where the plug wires plug in. Clean out if needed.
You may need a new cover or maybe more mag. internals rehabed.

Also check your mag kill switch and wiring. I usually just disconnect the wire from the mag and see what happens, if you have good spark switch could be bad or wire partly shorted. The only time one of my tractors would have a problem this simple is if I didn"t check it. Always cover the quick and easy things first. Good luck.

An easy way to check the valves is to energize the starter with the ignition off. The engine will momentarily rotate faster if one cylinder has no compression. An intake valve stuck open messes up the intake suction process and makes three of the four cylinders inoperative. Only the one other cylinder having simultaneously up and dowm motion with the bad cylinder can suck in fuel.
