help! my husband's old tractor is locked up in the gears, I guess. How does he get the top off the tramission. He can't find it in his old tractor book. Can you believe it is still going or was. I tried to pull it out of the neighbor's yard with our slt duraggo suv and it wouldn't move. MEN DON'T LIKE TO AS FOR HELP. He is an old car mechanic on transmissions with about 65 years experience and he is at wit's end on out to get the top off the transmission to check. I guess the unlocking of the gears.

Just four bolts on the top of the tranmission around the shifter. Pull it off, center the gears, and put the cover back on. The shifter forks are probably getting worn.

On the 310 the shifter forks are attached to the shifter rails. They move under the transmission housing that the tranny cover bolts on to. To get the cover off when it is stuck in gear, your have to move the rail back to it neutral position by unbolting the cover and using a thin tool to slide it back to neutral. Look up the CNH website and the parts diagrams for most CASEih machines are there.

Yes...that cover is a real pain to get off when stuck in gear. As Barry said, you have to slide a thin tool in from the back side or the front (depends on which gear it's stuck in) and try to slide the caught rail back to neutral before the cover will lift off. You're working blind so its a real pain. Good luck.

thanks for your help. my husband couldn't find a thin tool so he used a steel wire and hook it around a pin and pulled and finally got it loose. he has a broken fork of some kind. now he needs to find parts for it, I guess. THANKS SO MUCH ALL WHO POSTED IDEA'S.
