Hey guys,I just pulled my 52 VAC in the shop to do a few repairs while the snow is flying.I see I"ve got an oil leak between the engine and trans.I"m guessing it"s probably the rear main.My question is does the rear main go in from the rear or do I have to take the rear main cap off and install it that way?Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert on this but if your talking of housing between engine and transmission it has oil in it. I think mine holds six gallons? Was thinking thats the hydralic oil tank. If its not bad i wouldn't worry about it

Dave, Couple of questions before you start.

How much time money do you really want do you want to spend?
How far do your really take it?
Reason why I am asking is you may get in deeper than you really want.
1. If you want to change the rear main seal it isn't as easy as you think. If you have a wide front than it becomes even harder.
2. To get to two 1/4 20 bolts you have to drop the oil pan. They are inside the motor block. If you have a wide front then you have to drop the front end to get the oil pan off because the pan lacks about a 1/4' clearing the oil pump fron hanging on the yoke of the front end.
3. You have to split the tractor to get to the seal ring behind the fly wheel.
4.Since you have gone that far then I would go ahead have the clutch redone so you won't have to resplit in a year or so.
5. Also while you are there I would check the imput shaft going to the transmission. Grab a hold of the shaft and pull back and forth on the shaft if you have slight movement or slackness. Probably the bearings and seals need to be replaced.
Since the old seals were leather 99% of the time they damaged the shafts and left grooves where the seal was. Replacement seals are not as thick as the original's were. This is also a major place to leak. Having to much hy-trans fliud can also cause problems from the torque tube.
So back to my original question how far do you really want to take it.
After you do all the above still doesn't mean it won't leak.
How bad is it leaking? Does it hurt or bother anything leaking besides making a little mess. Floor sweep and cat litter can go a long way. They are rather inexpensive too! A quart of oil doesn't cost very much. hope this helps you along your decision making process. Good luck and if you have questions this isthe great board to answers from. Jim Yadon
