Hi All!
Alright heres a few questions. Im a heavy equip. operator and ive always wanted a old cat to restore. I recently happened on a Caterpillar 2 ton after looking for a few years about 3 miles from home! After looking it over fairly well, its all there and the engine is loose! The undercarriage is in pretty nice shape, although the sprokets have been welded up they are more than good for a few shows.
What is something worth like this for me to purchase?
I have read they weigh 2500 lbs on one site, then 9500 on another. These both seem like big extremes!
What do I need to look for in checking out the steering clutches?
Any little hints are really appreciated!
Thanks in advance

You are a lucky man to find one close and loose, the clutches may be frozen and not disengage which at worst would be removal and cleaning, but they not be,start it and test it, no idea of the value but it is a collectors item (dream) found a picture and a little info

Nebraska tractor tests #86 featured the Cat 2-Ton. Tested in July 1922. They list weight as 4040 pounds- sounds right for the name of the machine. Notes that it is virtually identical to the previous model T-35. Made by Holt Manufacturing.

Thank you all for the info gentlemen-

Im just into contact with the owner now. I was wondering if anyone thought Im nuts or hes nuts. It was run in the last ten years, outside the last four and it has been pulled around with a full size pickup to keep it limber! Heres the deal, he would like to part with it, but he has been offered $2100.00 by another party. they never came through, but I think I would have to pay well for it. What do i need to look for to avoid a parts machine instead of dream machine? I was thinking around a thousand. Its only missing the sidecovers, otherwise its there including the gauges, mag and carb. Any help is appreciated!
