Cat 955L loader transmission

I have a 955L that im wanting to sell but have found out that the transmission seems to get hung when going in forward and will only go in reverse. Can anyone tell me if it may be a simple fix or need of a new tranny? thanks.

Not sure what you mean, please tell us more? By the sounds of it the best way to tell how serious things are is to check the filter and magnetic screen for metal. Serious problems show up there.

Okay thanks. Im not really sure how else to explain it. My best desrciption is that there is something causing it not to move forward, but it does move in reverse. if it is a problem with the filter or magnetic screen are they easy to get to? thanks.

That's better Carrington, sounds like it is binding up when you try to go forward, not just sitting there slipping a clutch. If you hear the engine load down it's not likely linkage. Is it easy to select all gears or is it very stiff to shift from forward to reverse? There is a bellcrank in the F&R linkage that can seize up and when the bushings in the shaft going into the case get worn it also gets hard to shift. Then there are the hook ends on the selector spools inside that need to be adjusted when you have the valve pack out and in. They are adjusted so the spool ends are flush with machined surfaces of the valve. If it's loading the engine down in forward check the filter, could be a scrambled reverse clutch pack or planitaties. As I said before anything bad will show signs in the filter and screen. Come on back with what you find.

Okay so sorry it took so long to respond. I finally got the machine started and now it will not go in forward or reverse. When i put it in either forward or reverse it does nothing and the engine does not seem to carry a load either or get bogged down. i did check the fluid levels and they seemed to be low. so i guess i have a couple questions now. 1. does pressure need to build up to get it moving and would that be due to low fluid levels? 2. where is the filter to the tranny? is it under the foot control base plate? 3. I noticed that one side was a higher level of fluid than the other and the low side smelled burnt, would this be a sign that the filter is clogged? thanks!!!

Carrington, if you have an 85J machine the filter is under the floor plate on the side of the transmission, if you have a newer 13X machine it's remote mounted up under the LH arm rest. Change it and clean the magnetic screen(smaller housing beside filter with square cover) Cut filter open and look for ground up metal, chunks and slivers. Yes you need trans pressure to make the trans drive. The burnt smelling oil will be the transmission. Most likely a worn out pump that will not pick up oil anymore. Perhaps you should email me for more ideas. [email protected]

thank you very much. i will check that and get back to you as soon as i can. Your help has been awesome! If i have any other questions i will email you.

tried the email but didnt work so here is what i have found.
Okay so the loader is running well motor wise adn i replaced the filter and cleaned the magnets. the pump seems to be working bc there showed signs of small bubbles on the dip stick when showing that the fluid had been pumped through the lines. The issue is that the loader seems to be stuck in neutral. Instead of it being easy to switch from forward to revers in the neutral position it seems to be very hard. So i traced the bar that connect to the shifter and found that through when shifting through the gears it is easy but that the bar that is connected to the neutral control seems to be frozen or will barely move making it hard to shift between the forward and reverse controls. So I hope that i explained that well enough. if not im sure a few questions from your end will set me right in the explaination. Any hel pwould be great. thanks again for all the help that you have presented so far and for letting me contact you personally through email. Thanks!
