Contacted CAT for #6B8917 and #6B6663 and they tell me these parts have been discontinued.Anyone know where i could find these parts?

Thanks! I contacted Regal and they had the spring, but said the relief valve was discontinued. So, i'll have to keep looking for this part.

Here are a bunch of suppliers, salvage yards, and the like, also sign up on the ACMOC or ACME boards for the old Cat's good place to discuss these older tractors, here is a listing of parts suppliers from the ACMOC board:

Cat Engine and Pony Parts Source

order desk: 916-920-2222 or 2221 or inside calif. 1 800 367 6717
outside cal 1 800 824 5004 and a fax no. is 916 641 7725
owner is : Dave Kinman(sp) and if you need something really special dug up, then Brent is the guy. For normal stuff, just talk to the order taker and tell them you are with 'the ACME cat club' and you should have no problem. If you do, ask for Dave himself. Really nice guy, old school service..

Clevite, Hastings rings and most any engine part,, they can get it.
We have explained about out web/bb 'clubs' and the number of members and such. And he said he would be glad to sell to us, and has or can get about anything that goes in any engine. Certainly all the Hastings and Clevite rings, and they have them for most cats. Rings for the pony's are about $32 for the D2/D4 set, this is BOTH pistons worth.

Doesnt matter which which BB(club) you belong to, you can order through this, as its' just a 'name' to the order takers, for ordering purposes.Buying power... They PREFER we place our orders in the AM(Pacific time), so that we get them done before the big order phone calls come in. They have some very large accounts that they have to talk to when they call in, their contracted bread and butter. But thats ok, as we are still important to them(the owner, he said so).

They are in Sacramento,California ,, and will do 'will call', but prefer to ship, and will ship around the world to us. If they dont have it in stock, they will get it in, it might have another 10-15$ added on if they have to get it from another vendor, or its a special order item like old eaton valves, etc. Not so bad.. Special orders are usually 3-4 days to get to them. But, they will take care of us, and give us more than reasonables prices.

Well, the old eye balls ain't what they used to be...the plunger number is an 8B8917. Sorry about that. I'm checking with local Cat parts to check availability. Know I bought one in at least the last year. Sometime the parts guys won't bother looking up the latest interchange number.
This plunger and spring was used in a lot of later applications.

Never did get it straight as to whether or not you checked the existing valve. Very common to have them load up with junk and allow pump pressure to circulate.

I kind of wondered about that number because my husband has an old CAT 7U parts book and the spring number was the same as the one you gave me but the plunger was 8B8917.

About the exising valve, I guess they had it out and cleaned it all up but they were not sure if the spring had enough tension. We don't have anything to check the pump. What exactly do you use to check if the pump is wore out?

You can use "plastigage" to check the side clearance and feeler gage to check gear teeth to housing clearance. I check my side clearances with micrometers. As mentioned earlier the clearances are pretty tight and those side dimensions are totals (for both sides)

The 8B8917 plunger is now a 9M4608, readily available at $23.62.
The spring number is still good, also readily available at $4.76. Per local Cat dealer.
