When the transmission is cold the 2nd gear works. So I thought every was find with the dozer. When the transmission is warm, worked for a while, the 2nd gear does not work, it's like its not there, goes from 1st to 3rd gear. The transmission is the 3 forward & 1 reserve version. I seen somone had the same trouble in a earlier post the guy who replied said it was the clutch piston seal. how diffcult this is to change?

Brian, get a 600psi gauge with a 1/8"npt fitting and check the pump pressure as you shift through the gears at low idle with warm oil. That will tell if it's piston seals or worn clutch plates. Trans needs to come out for those repairs.

will it hurt to run the dozer likt that? It only happens when i run it hard and runs a little on the hot side otherwise 2nd will work.

There isn't a filter but there is a screen on the 3F/1R transmission. The shop that did my engine said it's a good sign if the screen is clean but the manual says to clean it every 250 hours. The engine and trans. probably have to come out as one unit if you have to repair the trans. At least they do on a 931B loader but I've heard it's a lot easier to do on a dozer version. The shop also said that a lot of people run 10W-30 oil(TO-2) in the trans. instead of straight 10W like the manual says. Supposed to work better when it gets hot in the summer. Engine and trans. weighs about 1600 lbs. I had to pull mine twice if you need any help. I got a print out from the Cat service manual. It's a big help. You have to take the trans. mounts right off to get everything out (on a loader model anyway). Dave

it is not going to get better on its own. probably the worst you will do is wear out the clutch disks. easy enough to replace when you do get around to replacing the seal. if you do it yourself you need to get a cat repair manual and follow it.

I'm also having trouble with the left clutch brake not grabbing like the right you have to pull the brake hard to make it turn. Tried to make an adjustment but got hot on that side. Do you think its the brake band worn? If so how dificult it is to change?

I have a D3C with 3 speed forward 1 reverse. After startup I have to wait a few minutes for it to move. Is this normal? How can I fix this? I don"t have a book and am looking for this screen to clean.

You should start a new post. Is the trans. oil filled to the proper level? Check with the engine running at low idle. The trans. does have a screen that could be partly plugged. How cold is it? I would worry more if it stopped moving after it warmed it. The screen is on the back of the trans. case. You have to take the floor plate off to get at it. A Cat dealer or heavy equipment repair shop could print you a page from the service manual. My 931B needs a lot more throttle to get moving when it's cold than when it's warm. I always let it warm up for a few minutes anyway. If it's quite cold, I let it warm up even longer. I know the oil has to warm up for the steering clutches to work if it's below freezing temperature.
