Cat D6C Engine Identification

(quoted from post at 14:06:59 03/18/23) Correct cylinder head part number is a 5S1884 with a casting number 2S2970

Finally got the book, it's saying 8M0694. 5S1884 is a cross but I'm finding a bunch of conflicting info about it. Loaded or bare, decompression lever provisions or not etc

The one I ended up would bolt down but I think the valve cover bolt holes are different and no decompression provision.

The head I pulled off has casting number 2S9790, I'm not sure of the casting on the new one. The part number on the box is 1P4303, and it has the enclosed intake casting.

For your engine you have the correct number if you can find it
that 8M0694 matches in the book. 5S1884 shows no
decompression lever assembly although there is one plug.
Does it still have a pony motor?

It's original with a 24v starting system.

No difference.
Here's the interchange numbers:
Casting Numbers...1M0030,2M5417,2S9790,5S1880,5S4100,8M0690
Part Numbers...0R1425,0R2124,0R2581,1S1600,4M6822,5S1260,5S1860,5S1884,
8M0694,9L1899

Looking at the parts book, there are different part numbers for several things, like the pre combustion chambers and valve spring parts. I just can't tell what the differences are.

Decompression mechanism on 8M0694 is the difference I can
see. It has electric start you say? If it has provision for
decompression lever i think it has been swapped to electric
start. Not sure if the pictures went through but I tried once

In your second picture, the combustion assembly has a part number of 5S1822. In the 8M0694 diagram it is different. I have not been able to verify why. It could be that they don't have the provision for glow plugs, or just a part number change.

Post part numbers have the same casting, the 5S one just has plugs in the holes for the compression release shaft.

The machine was stock electric start. From what I could get from the cat dealer, on the older ones they just used the same head on all the engines during assembly. It just varied which one got which starting system when the machine was assembled.

Talked to the company I got the head from this morning on my way home after work. They have a 5S1884 in stock for about $300 more. I already have the one they sent me all crated back up and ready to go. As soon as its on the freight truck they will ship out the other one. It should be all settled and on its way by the end of the week. On a computer at work and I am going to see if I can post pics from it, I am thinking the issues is with my phone.
