Chain Saw Troubleshooting Question

Husqvarna Chain saw Mode 435:

Looking for some troubleshooting hints before I get started.

Problem: It"s very hard to pull the starter; like it"s too much compression. When I remove the spark plug it pulls fine. Hooked up a compression guage I got a max reading of 90 PSI but again I had to struggle with the pull start to get a reading.

Bottom Line: Spark plug in: very hard pull, out: easy pull.

Appreciate any suggestions on next troubleshooting steps.

Thanks!

Start with the simple stuff. Has the starter puller arbor been lubed? Is anything binding? Is the pulley cracked? Is the flywheel loose? Does it have a decompression button?

Beyond that, have you run it? How does it run? Is this a new or used saw? If it's new they tend to take a little while to loosen up. If used it could be big problems like a bad crank or scored cylinder or it could just be a nice tight saw that takes some muscle to pull over.

I have the same problem with a model 36 Husky. Saw ran fine for 3 years. I cut about a cord of wood a year for the hunting camp. When and if the saw starts it runs fine. Had the rewind starter apart and everything is OK - took the muffler/spark arrester off and could find no problems.

Does 435 have a black button just forward of the spark plug? Mine is a 450 and the button is to release compression for starting. I don"t know if the 435 is so equiped.

Is the pull rope original? If it's been replaced and it's too short, it will pull a lot harder. Too short a rope give less pull leverage because the diameter of the circle it pulls from is smaller.

I have a Mac 130. Being left handed it's hard to hold it with my right hand and pull the rope with my left hand.
I clamp it in my vise and pull start it.

Possible loaded up with oil in the cylinder? Mine has done that once in a while. Several pulls on the rope later, and it seems to be OK again. Always assumed there was fuel/oil collected in the cylinder making the compression very high.
