Changing to a push button starter

Hey Guys, I was needing to know which 2 wires I need to attach to make a push button start from a key start? My ignition key starter is shot and all it has on it is the starter, no lights, glow plugs or anything else, so I want to convert over to a push button. I'll run 2 new wires dedicated to starter button. It's a 3 cyl diesel in case that matters. Thanks mick

Buy a universal ignition switch that has a "START" position.

Won"t cost much and the start can"t be activated without the key.

ONE example... Dorman Part # 85936, about $11.00 @ O"Reilly"s
Switch

Don't disable the starter safety switch. My FIL was run over by an 850 he was using to turn a grain auger because he had disabled the switch. He survived the ordeal but was never the same again. Joe

Mick, how are you going to keep it from starting in gear? So many people start a tractor from the ground, standing right in front of the rear tire. I know they are wrong for doing this, but IF one of them starts your tractor and gets run over, then the lawyers will say your tractor had been modified and the safety features removed, causing the accident. Better re-think this. Tom

Wow, the guy asked which two wires he needs to use that are currently going to his key switch to be able to use a push button to replace the Start position of the key switch.

He's gotten two replies so far lecturing him on the folly of disabling the starter safety switch, which he didn't say he was going to do, plus he got two more replies telling him where to buy a replacement key switch.

It sounds like maybe he already has a push button switch that he wants to use and doesn't have, or doesn't want to spend, the money for a replacement key switch. If he leaves all of the other wires on the key switch and just hooks up the correct two to the push button switch, the safety switch should still be in line with the starter circuit, and everything should work the same as it did with the original key switch, except maybe the starter will turn without the key on, but it won't start in gear.

Mick, I'm sorry that I don't know which wires you need to use to do what you want to do, or I would gladly tell you. Saying that it's a 3 cylinder diesel doesn't help a lot, as There were dozens of Ford tractor models that used 3 cylinder diesel engines and the wiring changed from model to model over the years. Perhaps if you tell us exactly what model tractor it is, someone could answer your original question.

Those warnings are needed when Dufus messes with a starting circuit or tries to wire up a solenoid. We had a poster who had a voltmeter but didnt know to use it.He had both leads across an ignition switch. He said I turn the switch on, no power.I turn the switch off, have power.Another was going to measure the spark plug voltage with his 9 buck meter.
