Just bought a new battery from the local JD dealer. I started restoring a JD M 5 years ago. First thing I did was buy a battery, after determining that it would turn over. Long story short it is 5 years later and the battery is shot now that I need it! My question is it better to install a bat switch or keep connected to a float charger. I had a float charger connected to the last battery and monitored it regularly. Voltage ran from 6 to 7 volts and never had to add water. Maybe I'm lucky to get 7 years out of it? EGBinOR
 
I had same thing happen on tractor, battery went bad before I got the restoration done. Seven years is a good life.
 
I have had really short life with 6 volt batteries.
I just don't think they make them good because of so few things use them. They always seem to leak out the caps too.
Optima is to make a good sealed 6 volt ,but I have not tried any. They are VERY expensive.
 
Bought a 6 volt optima several years ago and it is still good even with me neglecting it. Was pricey but was having all sorts of trouble with the regular batteries. I just move it from tractor to tractor and it has done the job so far!
 
On my 630 I was having to replace one or the other 6V batt. every year and the tractor was just a toy. Took the 2 6's out and put one 12V in and no more problem. I don't know why a 6V don't last.

Probably overkill, but I do both
when I park anything in my buildings, gas off(after making sure it doesn't seep/leak), battery cable pulled.
tractors of different colors that have hard to get to batteries,
a wingnut on the solenoid battery cable connection is fast.
Only takes a minute to hook back up, and with old tractor wiring
with no fusible links, and endless chewing critters, it gives me peace of mind.
