Charging system

As you guys have read, I now have a 1600 gas. Being short on power, (2 horses down, one with a blown fuel pump, the other with a blown seal in the rear end), I have use this ole horse. The previous owner put the battery in backwards. Meaning, this tractor still has the generator system, so it is not negative ground. So after buying a new voltage regulator and having the generator rebuilt, the tractor still wont start without a jump. I'm guessing the battery is fried like everything is. What I wanna know is if i missed anything? Thank you.

Does the battery go dead while the tractor is working? If it runs for hours without going dead it is charging at least enough to keep it running but maybe not enough to charge the battery properly. Putting the battery in backwards won't hurt much with a generator system. Try a volt meter at the battery with the engine at high idle, should be 13.5 to 14.2 volts. If that is ok your starter may be wornout and drawing to many amps for the battery in the tractor. HTH, Have a good time making hay!

How many volts do you have at the starter when you try to start it? How many do you have at the battery when you try to start it? A $25.oo meter is a good tool to have.

I had the same problem with my 550. Someone had it backwards and I had a bad battery and coil. Replaced those and made a big difference. I ended up putting a new wiring harness in mine but that was b/c it needed it in spots (wore through, spliced).
I also went with new battery cables. Wire brushed where the ground is too. Sometimes all those little things add up.
