Chasin' Dew

Hi Guys,

It's so darned dry out in this country that we spend the better part of the summer looking for dew as a lot of the operations have to be done when it is damp out.

Makin' hay, balin' straw and handling beans for absolute sure. So, a good sloppy dew is an "event" out here in this neck of the woods.

To the field early this morning and finished up my baling of the wheat straw. All done by 7am.

Now, to spend the rest of the day hauling those bales in to the feed yard. :<(

Allan, sometimes I have to do that here in old KY. Usually only with alfalfa or red clover. If you wait until it is dry, there is nothing but stems and dust left. Looks like you had a heavy dew this morning.

When my little brother was going to college down at Oklahoma State, he took a newspaper article from one of the local Baca county (Colorado) newspapers where they had an article about the dew that week... It read in part:

"... up to 2 / 100's of an inch of moisture was reported in the form of a heavy dew last night; lesser amounts reported in other areas..."...

He wanted to show the guys downstate how big of an event any moisture out here in the Panhandle is...

I grew up in south central Nebraska, usually the problem was getting the hay dry enough to bale. But, having said that, it is too dry back there now. I did live in Colorado for a few years and found out it was unheard of to bale hay in daylight hours unless early in the morning, otherwise all dust and no leaves. Don't know where Allen is, but if far enough west in Nebraska may be the same issue, hay or straw that feels wet to the touch in the early hours may actually be where it needs to be. If a hay moisture meter is used, what feels wet may actually be what is right.
