Checking 8N pump pressure

Can you put a pressure gauge on the pump output fitting under the casing and tell if it is building up the right amount of pressure. I removed the plug and let some oil squirt out. It pulsed slowly with the lever in one position and stoped when in the other. I put my finger over the output and could not stop it but thats not saying much. Can you put a gauge on this and tell if the pump is ok. What should the pressure be????

You need to chain the lift arms down to get the full pump pressure reading of 1600 pounds.

You should NEVER use body parts to check for oil pressure any where on an engine or tractor. Thats a good way to have body parts that would then need to be removed. If oil did get injected into your finger they can not save that finger only thing they can do is cut it off. Please never do that I've known to many people that have lost body parts doing things like that

Mike..........why do you suppose the hydraulic pump base corner plug is officially named the "pressure test port"????

Why do you suppose the I&T FO-4 manual has 16-pages of instructions (with pictures for the reading challenged) on how to "test and adjust" the hydraulic system??? Iff'n you'd squander $25 (cheap) for a manual, you'd find out the the corner test port needs a 2000psi gauge and that normal hydraulic pressure (lift arms chained down) is 1500 to 1700psi. Isn't that amazing??? What a concept, reading a manual........respectfully, Dell

As it is becoming aparent the tractor that I inherited from my neighbor which came with an original Ford Tractor Mod 8N Operator's manual does'nt even apply. I also purchased a 9n,2n,8n master parts catalog as well as a ford 9n,2n,8n service manual from YT, so your asertion that I am to cheap to buy a manual is incorrect. These manuals don't have much in the way of testing proceedures especially pressure gauge hook-up. It is also becomming aperant that this tractor is not a 8N at all even though it came with a 8N operators manual.
It's grey, has ferguson systems lable on grill , is 3 speed, and has 3 spoke steering wheel, front distributer, no position control lever and I beam front axel supports, WOW!!!!!!!!how much more screwed up can I get.I am guessing now that it must be a 9N or 2N. There is no engine model or serial number due to much block welding. So now I have a hydraulic problem on a hole new tractor.

I-beam should say 2N but of course it could also be a mutt, one made from 2 or 3 other tractors. Also look at casting numbers which will be all over it. If they start with 2N again more likely its a 2N. Also under the rear end is a date stamped which will tell you closer to what year it is. 1939-1942 is a 9N 1942-1947 is a 2N and 1948-1952 is 8N. Also as per the I-T manual FO4 which covers all of them paragraph 114 it explains real well how to test hyd pressure. And again as before please don't do it with your finger.

You have a 9n or a 2n.. the VERY SAME instructions in the fo4 or the ford service manual tell you about the hyd testing.

In addition to the other kind assistance you've been given the test port threads are 1/2-20 UNF. An SAE-5 ORB type adapter fitting can be used to attach your gauge - do not attempt to install a NPT fitting in that port. The SAE dash 5 is not a commonly used size. If you can't find one I have several and here is an online source:

Well I have seen people use there forearm and or parts of there leg to do it before. Not a pretty picture at times
