Hi Illefty: I bought a 4 month old 1965 Corvette which was one of the first to get the new big-block engine to replace the 327 fuel injected engine. This was the 425hp 396cu and GM updated it to the 427 right away in 1966. A few years later they offered the 454. All engines were related. In 1973 I bought a SS ElCamino 454 and that was the de-tuned gutless result of the end of the muscle car era. Years later I read that the 396 I had was a collector item because only Corvettes in 1965 got the 450hp 396 but it was labled 425hp. First mass produced car getting 0-60 in 5 seconds. 0-100-0 in 25 seconds. Heck of an engine. Hard to get high enough octane gas for it. Factory headers & solid state ignition which big deal way back then. Fun to have been young then. ag

The detuning (270 HP in my Monte Carlo) was in 1972, 1st year the engine could use regular gas. The leaded type fouled plugs making them last about 6000 miles. I traded a 1966 383 Plymouth for the Monte Carlo, thought it would have more power than the Plymouth-- NOT with the detuning. Of course the Chrysler products went to lower compression about that time too.

1970. 454cu in...4bblcarb...360 hp @44oo rpm....500 ft lbs torque at 3200 rpm....ama hp 57.8....bore and stroke....4.251x 4.000 compression ratio...10.25:1 hydraulic lifters.

Hi CNKS: Thanks for the info. I had slight plug fouling too for first couple thousand. A friend at work was into engines for quarter mile as well as dirt oval tracks and he knew a lot so I let him talk me into switching motor oil. This 396 had Conoco since factory oil was drained. My friend gave me two choices. Mobile 10w-30 or Shell 10w-30. A mobil station was close so I used that for maybe 1,000 miles then drained again and added Mobil 10w-30 with new GM filter and the plug fouling stopped and it used about half as much between oil changes which back then for me was 2k miles. I didn't push that engine too much unless it was needed to keep from loosing a race. I've stayed with Mobil a long time but now with very low Zinc levels I am switching to Rotalla T 15w-40 and 10w-30 for most of the engines I have. That 1965 Vet 396 engine was a screamer. Red line at 6,400 and if not carefull it'd go towards 7k. Factory Solid lifters etc. .. fast for back then and I think about the peak year for GM muscle cars engines. ag

Amazing how engine technology has been refined and computer control added.
Now a factory stock emissions legal 6.2L/376cu" chev smallblock will walk all over the old 454's. Last 100,000miles plus, over 100,000 miles on the ignition system and fan belt without servicing. No vapour lock or flooding.Get's 20+mpg in an car chassis. Starts on the 1st rotation at -20F or 120F.
Weighs how much less being made of all aluminum
vs the rat block's cast iron?
403 net flywheel HP in truck engines,430HP in the base corvette engine, 505HP optional in the vette.400 and 426 in the Camero.
May the 454 rest in peace.

Hello Gleen F,
First 454 was made in 1970. 3 H.P ratings;
345 H.P.@ 4400 R.P.M's; 500 Ft. Lbs Torque @300 R.P.M's.
390 H.P. @ 4800 R.P.M's 500 Ft.Ls. torque @3400 R.P.M's.
460 H.P. @ 5600 R.P.M.s 490 Ft.Lb.torque @ 3600 R.P.M's. All with the same bore and stroke, single 4 barrel carburetor.
