I am taking my 1979 Chevy C-70 dump truck( Gas 366ci., VERY VERY LOW milage, 20,400 miles) out of long term storage and want to change the oil. I use to use 10W40 but I don't have anything else that uses that weight oil so I was wondering, would 15 W 40 that I use in other things be ok? Thanks!!

John, I know this will open up a hornet nest of comments. A 366 Big Block will run fine on a good quality 30wt oil. for we ran 4 different trucks with 366 BBs. A 70 C60, a 72 C60, a 74 C65, a 79 C70,
Our 70 model was our water truck w/ a 1500 gal tank, hauling 4 to 5 loads to wheat pasture cattle/day in the winter! OBTW this truck was an old city of Wichita Ks. garbage truck reject.
The 72 and 74 are 22ft tandam grain trucks an we ran them hard hauling regular loads of 34000k of corn and 40000k of wheat, during the 3.5 weeks of wheat and 4 weeks of Corn harvest. Run right foot flat on the floor to the elevator at 50 mph, and Balls-to-the -wall comming home at 80 mph.
The 79 C70 and Ensilage truck with a Oswalt/Butler 3 auger mixer body W/ electronit scales ran 20 wt oil in the dead of winter. 30 wt the rest of the year. Used only Texas Refinery Corp. oil only.
So 15w40 will work just fine BUT .... Chevron Delo ONLY! I will not use Rotella on a Whiskey bet.
My 97 F150 4.6 V8, 4x4 with 330K miles has been on Dello 15w40 since I got it in June of 97, 315K miles back!!! Yes this truck went on Dello at my first oil change at 15K miles.
Sorry Guys just my experiences. John Run what you like>>>>>
Later,
John A.

You will be just fine with 15w40

I got one that is knocking and put 85-140 gear lube in the engine so I could go another 4 miles.
It has a 20 foot box on it I use for staorge.

use 30 wt 15-40 is to heavy and it will starve the bearings for oil belive it or not heavier is not always better .

I run a large fleet (30 cars and 24 trucks) both gas and diesel, and Rotella T has given us the best performance. Run 15W40 in all of 'em. Hundreds of thousands of miles on the majority of these vehicles.
