Chisel plow or disc chisel?

I am debating between one or the other. New to farming I am looking for the best choice that is relatively easy on the wallet. I have seen regular chisel plows and then disc chisel plows. I know the difference, but is a disc chisel really better to get than just the regular chisel? Should I rule out the regular chise, being perhaps the disc chisel does a nicer job? Please comment from experience. Thanks

A regular chisel is much cheaper than a disc chisel, here in Wisconsin. A disc chisel works much better in dry corn STALKS, eg- following a combine or picker. A regular chisel works good in corn STUBBLE, eg- following a chopper, but doesn't work at all in STALKS unless it is chopped or disked first. A disc chisel works well in both situations.

how is a regular chisel worthless in bean stubble? Alot of guys with chopping cornheads or shredders are going back to chisels, alot less machinery to maintain

Agreed- If you have a stalk chopper on the back of the combine, you don"t leave a windrow of bean straw...so a regular chisel works fine. If You don"t have the chopper, a disc chisel will still plug behind a combine leaving a windrow. I have both, bought the chisel when I still plowed corn stalks, bought the disc chisel when I quit plowing.

DC is a White with the front discs on a cyl so I can raise them out of the ground when doing bean stubble, lower them when in corn stalks. 33 year old Glencoe Giant C chisel is handy for digging out rocks------how can you argue with a machine that you haven"t broken anything on, even digging out 3 foot diameter rocks? Well, ok, the one time I decided to back up, rather than make another circle to hit the sucker again......broke a shank cuz they don"t tolerate any pressure on the back side! And the rock was just peeking up enough to catch the shovel.

On the other hand, going straight forward.....I have "modified" the curve of some shanks, but never broken one! It"s fun hunting rocks with a chisel like that! Good to rip out old fencelines as well. Bought new in 1980 for $1500, well worth it.....covered countless acres.

What are your crops? Corn? I chop corn stalks ahead of a disc chisel. (see below) Chopping stalks before a regular chisel....it will still plug occasionally. Not with a disc chisel. Buy one with discs you can raise when not needed. Pulls easier on bean ground....and don"t cause unnecessary wear on tillage components. Sometimes I drop the discs when bean stubble is thick......just need to hit the hyd lever, and keep going. No shortcuts on getting good machinery that works. Buy a good one once, and be done with it!

I moldboard plow my stalks then run the disc over it in the fall. Field cultivator in the spring before planting.
