Chisel Plow vs. Bottom Plow

i want to plant about 5 acres for a dove field, i have a 10 ft. chisel plow and was wondering if it would be better to plow it with that or my 2-14" bottom plow. Which is recommended?
thanks

Never heard of a dove field. Could you provide more details as to tractor and type of crop among others? Should I assume this is hunting related?

If you are needing to turn sod under, beter go with the moldboard. If you just need to work some dirt(no sod) use the chisel.

Probably not gonna matter......depending on what's growing there now. They're both primary tillage tools and the soil will need additional preparation. I assume you've got 2 (or more) tractors. Can't imagine any tractor that would work with both a 2-bottom plow and a 10 ft chisel.

Our northern version of a chisel plow & possibly your version of a chisel plow are very different implements. A chisel plow up here works up the ground deeper & harder than a plow, but leaves the top a bit rougher with most of the trash still on top.

Your version of a chisel plow might be like an old Dearborn, kinda a heavy built field cultivator.

For your use, either one will be just fine. As mentioned, if sod the plow will work out better.

the field has very little grass and weeds that i bushogged down so i am hoping to get by with the chisel plow since i can go quicker than with the moldboard plow

A chisel turns under about 1/3 of the residue with one pass, plow turns up to all of it. If sod, likely to take two passes with a chisel before secondary tillage. Either one works.

yes it is for hunting doves on. the guys that i've worked up plots for want me to come back in the fall and bush hog some strips in the field. knocking the seeds out makes the doves come in and the quial will run and hid in the strips you don't bushhog down. brown fox tail millet is the favorite thing here. sunflower will be eaten up while they are still on the stalk and make hunting really unsafe because you can't see through it as you can lower growing plants. soy beans and millet makes a nice comb.

I always break ground with a chisel plow with twisted spikes. I hit it at 2 or 3 different angles in the fall. I let it go through the winter freeze up, the existing clumps really capture the moisture in the snow, if there is any. This is important in SW ND. In the spring I hit it with a disc then plant. If I used a mulboard plow everyone would have to comment on how crooked I drove the tractor.

I try for pheasants, not doves. I don't plant plots anymore as I discovered the secrete for raising pheasants. Disturb the ground and let the weeds grow ! Plenty of benifical insects for young chicks to eat, plenty of seeds from the weeds and excellent cover. I discovered this late one spring when I was mowing weeds in the tree rows, pheasant chicks running everywhere and 10 or so prarie wolfs (coyote) showing up for a easy lunch.

lcloninger, Here in Central Texas...Chisel plows only Nobody owns one much less uses one! The Chisel plow is the most versatile plow ever.
Case in point...Your plow with twisted points...Set an easy depth that your tractor can handle, say 6 inches, plow your field in Throughs, not a Land fashion. Now add 2 more inches in depth, set an angle to the first plowing and replow your field again.
Let the field dry a few days, Change out the twisted shanks for 12 to 14 in sweeps, now farm that land again in a third angle, different to the first two, Also drag a spiketooth harrow or heavy pipe or chain to bust clods and level out low and high spots. You will have a very nice seed bed and close to 10 in of seed bed preped. Hope this helps....NO I do not own a moldboard, Just a heavy chisel plow and a heavy disk,
Later,
John A.

I LOVE a chisel plow and hate a moldboard plow but, if theres a rock to be found, the chisel plow will bring them up.
