chrome emblems

Someone long ago painted over the chrome emblems. I have used a scraper & 3M scratch pad to get the wide flat places but was wondering if you could soak it or spray it with something to get all the grooves, corners, edges etc.? Soaking it in gasoline doesn't help. Too, now I notice blisters on the chrome. Is there some way to re-chrome an emblem?

They rechrome bumpers, grills, etc on old cars. A body shop can probably help you.

As far as stripping paint goes, years back I used this stuff that might"ve been called "Stripper" that looked like and had the consistency of Corn Huskers hand lotion, but it sure didn"t feel like Corn Huskers for long if you got it on you. Was a potent acid, and when putting it on painted surfaces, even baked on paint, you could literally watch it bubble off within seconds. On the skin...YOUCHHHHHHHHH!!! That was some wicked stuff, and probably banned by now.

I worked at a machine shop decades ago that chromed its own punches and stuff, and don"t know much about it, other than electrically charging acid (I think) and nickle and...got me. I"m guessing that you might want to take it to some place that will chrome or re-chrome for you. They"ll more than likely strip it for you, and tell you whether or not the pitting has made it scrap or not, or can be fixed, or...

Check out Hemmings Motor News. I know it's available at most magazine stands and is prolly accessable via the web. Lots of companies advertise there that specialise in restoring old emblems. Most are quite reputable none are cheap.

I'm aware of paint stripper; thanks. I was afraid it would attack chrome like it does paint.

I'm aware of one place that re-chromes car parts etc. They do a good job, and I can get there # for you if you want.

If they need to be re-chromed anyway I would just take them to a good chrome shop. Most communities have one and they will dip the part in a solution that will take all the old chrome, paint, etc off the part before they start the new chroming process.
