Cleaning Hydraulics

Ok, got the pump out now and have read on here to use mineral spirits or Diesel fuel to clean out the sump area. Any thoughts on filling it up with 3 or 4 gallons of diesel and running the tractor down the road to get it sloshin around in there good? Then maybe running the hydraulics up and down a couple times (no attachments) to get the old fluid out of the cylinders?

Do not start the engine to run the diesel/mineral spirits through the pump;mineral spirits and diesel fuel do not have sufficient lubrication properties for a 60 year old hydraulic pump designed to be immersed in 90w gear oil. Some folks say it’s ok to start the engine, engage the pump for a minute or two, then turn the engine off. Your call on that one. I wouldn't.

Gotta agree with Bruce on this one. A good spraying from a bean sprayer with Diesel & a small brush will do wonders.
You don't really have "cylinders" to flush anyway. Gravity should take care of most of it.
Nasty job but rewarding & kinda fun! :lol:

Well I assumed that most would have enough common sense to know that i would put the pump back in and fill it with diesel, however there is always one or two that you have to spell it all out for.

Well, you should have cleaned the Ell out of it, while you had the pump out.

And NO don't go damaging things with no lubrication.

Split it in half. Makes it easier to get in there.Scrub brushes, putty knife and diesel.

I'd scrape / spray clean, then flush with the solvent.. I'm not a fan of running debri laden solvent thru my pump and valves!

Due to sittin outside for 3yrs with a bad shifter seal..... the gear oil in mine looked like a mixture of "grey pouopn mustard" with a lil "bar's stop leak" mixed in.

I drained her and pulled the side covers, manually removed what sludge I could from around the pump, poured a lil diesel in each side to rinse a little more out, then put her all back together. Dunno if this is right or wrong, just what I did.

Buddy of mine filled his fordson with diesel to flush it.......... said afterward it did such a good job it leaked from everywhere it could!!!! Not something he'd do again.
