Cleaning up gas tank

I took the gas tank off of my 600 to replace the shutoff valve. I'm thinkin' I should try to clean some of the rust out of the tank . Should I put some sand in there and shake it around ? Wonder if I can get it all back outa there. Any ideas ?? In order to still be able to use the tractor I made a plywood piece and bolted to the original tank mounts , so I could mount a small mower tank. Works GOOD, has a 1/4 in. fuel shutoff and everything.

DON'T USE SAND or you will sooner or later be rebuilding that engine because you will never get the sand out but it sure will get into the engine. You can use say 1/2 inch nuts, count them before you put them in and make sure you get the same number out. You can also take it to a radiator shop and have it boiled out.

Old: Thanks for the advise about the Sand . Ya know there was alotta rust particles in the sediment bowl, and in the carb. bowl too. The main jet was plugged and I just ended up getting a different carb. to get it to run.

I have an Allis D-17 like that. I pull the sediment bowl off of it about once a day when I'm running it because of the rust in the tank. Been running it now for 2 years that way and it just keeps on keeping on. One of these day maybe I'll pull the tank and do more to it

rocks, bolts, nails,,, just cleaned and lined one,,,used rocks and they were real hard to git out so on the next 600 tank will use nails so i can use a magnet to fish'em out with,,, the fill neck is recessed into the tank and thats why its hard to shake the nails out,,, i had to reduce my wet vac hose down and come up with a flexible hose to git in the 600 tank to suck the rocks out

You can get a DIY tank clean and re-line kit for about $60. There is an acid that peels all the junk out and then a two part epoxy that coats and seals the tank. No more rust and no problems.

I was lookin' at that stuff, But work is realy slow now and I gotta do it on the CHEAP ! he he maybe next time, I know I'll have to do it again

Some folks will disagree but I used an in line filter in gas line. Seemed to take care of sediment from plugging carb screen. Cleaning tank is a temporary solution unless is is coated. With a 60 year old tank an extra filter cant hurt. Mine is a clear glass see-thru filter made for a non-pressurized system. Bill

Since your tractor is running you can do this. Jack up the back wheel and bungee the tank to the hub, put the nuts in and let it turn slowly for a half hour or so. I used a tescoping magnet to get them out.
