clutch drag

One day my stepfather was mowing with his 8N and he couldn"t get the clutch to release. They split the tractor and found a pin with a cotter pin missing in the pressure plate. They put it all back together with a new cotter pin and a new clutch disc. It has 3/4 inch of free travel and the clutch feels just fine but it drags bad. We cannot shift gears and to stop it in 3rd gear you have to use a lot of brake to hold it, we cannot drive it this way. Could he have put the disc in backward??? It feels fine but has a lot of drag? Any one have an idea? We may need a new pressure plate? Thanks

did you repalce the pilot bearing? T/O bearing?

Jonesie.......yep, the clutch hub is an "off-set" design and iff'n installed BASSACKWARDS (long side must face the tranny) it will NOT RELEASE just as you are complaining. Takker'part and fixxer rite. .......Dell

While you had it apart I can't understand why you wouldn't replace the pressure plate and throw out bearing! It is a lot of work to tear her down again. Heck you might just as well replace the tranny seal while your in there. Just my thoughts.

Unless you've found some secret way to split your tractor,it's a lot more work than I'd like to do on a regular basis.When you're in there,it's best to replace everything that may be less than perfect.Also if you're not absolutely sure,read the manual,and look on line,and you'll find lots of tutorials about most things.---lha

Thanks guys for the replies. I was NOT there when he had another guy helping him. He did put in a new disc and throw out bearing , but used the old pressure plate. I am afraid he is going to have to pull it apart again. Again, thanks.
