I have both tractors a 1555 and a 1655 I was wondering which one I should put a Cummins in to do some tractor pulling? I don’t care about how much work it will be I just wanna know the tranny differences and which one will be stronger. Thanks

Which one is stronger tho
Helical is stronger. I would be more concerned with rear end components not handling the extra power. The most popular choice is the 1850 diesel because the tub is wider. A friend put one in his 1800. Engine set around 140 hp. It was in an industrial application and his is holding up ok so far doing tillage work. When you get this project going post back with pics. Good luck !

I agree with 300jk that helical may be considered stronger strictly from a gear strength perspective as more than one tooth in engagment, however you are more apt to have bearing issues because of the thrust load encountered with helical gears when putting two or 3 times the load on them then what they were intended for. Also straight cut gears rob less power than a helical gear. For a pull tractor I think straight cut gears may actually have an advantage? I know there are a lot of fleetlines in the pulling world that are putting out some pretty impressive power and I believe all spur gear transmissions.

6 cylinder Cummins. Yea that was my thought exactly with straight cut vs helical. Does anyone know the rear end differences between the 1555 and 1655

Everything is different. There is virtually no parts interchange between them because of the straight cut vs helical cut gears. I don’t know if he still does or not but at one point Brad Maibach had a 1655 with a 4BT Cummins he built as a puller and that little 4 cylinder was shoe horned in there. About the only way you’re probably going to get a 6BT in there is going to be to throw the cast tub out and build one from scratch.
