I bought a 9N that has been converted to 12 volt, has front mount distributor. When I bought it I was told that it was burning up coils, any ideals why?

Easy answer .... I bet you don't have a resistor in the circuit.

Check for that first. If'n you do, then there is a list of things to look for. But start there.

Here's what happens without the little 1 ohm resistor. I went thru 2 coils and had this one melt the solder out of the pigtail.

Bruce, thanks for all the details. I just wanted to add that for measuring very low resistances, the ohmmeter leads have some value. In older analog meters there was a calibration wheel: you would connect the ohmmeter leads together and set it for a zero value. Digital ones typically don't have the calibration, so on the lowest scale, touch the probes together and see what you get. If you get 0.3 ohms, you want to subtract that from the reading of the part that you are measuring. Just wanted to add this since if someone got 0.6 ohms they might think they had a bad resistor..

Excellent info! I'm so used to doing that I forgot to mention it. "Zero the meter" is what I was taught years ago.

Depends on the meter. Mine is a Craftsman, cost about $80. I get the same readings on stuff that my neighbors $200 Fluke does. .03 on the cold ballast resistor, front coils from .6 to 1.5 ohms, etc.
