I have a 1951 8n 6volt side mount distributor. The local Ford parts store sold me a 12 volt coil and said that would work fine. Is it true that a 12 volt coil will work on a 6-volt system?

no it's not true.. unless the 12v coil they sold you is really a 6v coil that says it needs extra resistance to run on 12v. f it says that.. then yeah.. it will probably run.

Ask them to explain the difference between a 6v coil & a 12v coil.

If they know the correct answer, then they know it will not work CORRECTLY. Depending on how well tuned, etc, the tractor is, it might not work at all.

The difference is in the internal resistance; a 12v coil has 3.25 ohms & a 6v coil has less than 2. At 3.25 ohms & 7.35 volts, you will only get about 2.2 amps of current. You need 3.5 amps.

Take it back.

you may get a very, very weak spark, but not enough to run the tractor...

depends... if it is truly a 12v coil.. then you mihgt get a weak spark. if it's a 6v coil that says it needs extra resistance. it will liekyl work fine.

bobby3.......ignition coils are mysterious round things that work like litebulbs. Would you expect a 12-volt litebulb to work on 6-volts??? Well yeah, dimly; same with 12v sparkie coil on 6-volts, weak sparkies. Takker back and COMPLAIN and INSIST on a real 6-volt coil. NO SUBSTITUTION!!! UNDERSTAND??? .......sheesh, the amazed Dell
