S.M.2004 says to repair cracks in cast iron using a cold weld ? is what would thay use.
thay list a method developed by Kerkling and company in bloomington indiana. just looking for more info/opt on cold welding cast

I think cold welding is :arc weld about 1" with a nickle rod let it cool until you can hold your finger on the weld before you weld the next inch.
 
Try your friend Google - I saw cracks in large castings repaired in a power plant years ago by a process that was for sure cold. A traveling technician shows up and does some stop drilling then forces some material in the holes and cracks - all done cold but there was some cure time
 
Some repairs to heads are done bvy drilling holes in the cracks and driving rods in to fill up the spacxe. You have to put a rod at both ends of the crack. usually the process is kept prety secret, but you can look at what was done and see the rod ends. Never heard of cold welding cast. What are you wanitng to repair. Try marlyn smith at 712-489-2570 for a replacwmwent part. You'll be a head of the game if you just replace the part.
 
I had the head of may JD M repaired by a Co. called Frigidweld (Marshfield WI). Yes there is some secrecy about the process. He did talk about pins and not allowing the piece to get even hot to touch. Very time consuming. He guaranteed the work. It was a fine crack on top of the head, under rockers. Cost me $175 bout 5 years ago. He also planed the gasket surface to assure straightness. My other choice was to get a new Chinese made head fot about $350. I think I did the rite thing. KB
 
Many years ago we used to fix cracked heads by drilling, tapping and installing tapered plugs. The plugs were started at each end of the crack and worked towards the center. They also overlapped each other and we put a abundant coating of irontite (a metallic epoxy type of material) on the plugs and then baked the heads before we milled them flat again. It's time consuming and will not work with all cracks, dependant on shape and location, but we fixed a lot of two cylinder heads using this method..
 
I have very good results with Muggyweld rod. I pre-heat a bit on a grille or with the rosebud tip, weld her up, then cool down the same way, turning down the heat slowly with a big piece of R-30 on it top and bottom.

Google LOCK & STITCH for Metal Stiching or GOODSON & Crack repair. IRONTITE by KWIKWAY Manufacturing. I have used all of them for 30 yrs. You have to follow instructions. You cannot skip one step. If you want to weld cast Lock & Stitch can tell you the step by step to do it right.Presure test when done . I like to preheat the head then pressure test. If anyone tells you it doesn't work it is because it wasn't done correctly.

letting each weld section cool to the touch is definitely necessary before adding another stitch....but it also helps to lightly tap on the weld with a light hammer after each stitch to take the stress out that you just applied.

Because of the plastic deformation involved, it is necessary that at least one (but preferably both) of the mating parts be ductile. Prior to welding, the interface is degreased, wire-brushed, and wiped to remove oxide smudges. Cold welding can be used to join small workpieces made of soft, ductile metals.

It is now known that the force of adhesion following first contact can be augmented by pressing the metals tightly together, increasing the duration of contact, raising the temperature of the workpieces, or any combination of the above. Research has shown that even for very smooth metals, only the high points of each surface, called asperities, touch the opposing piece. Perhaps as little as a few thousandths of a percent of the total surface is involved. However, these small areas of taction develop powerful molecular connections; electron microscope investigations of contact points reveal that an actual welding of the two surfaces takes place after which it is impossible to discern the former asperitic interface. If the original surfaces are sufficiently smooth, attractive van der Waals forces between contact points eventually draw the two pieces completely together and eliminate even the macroscopic interface[citation needed].

Exposure to oxygen or certain other reactive compounds produces surface layers that reduce or completely eliminate the cold welding effect. This is especially true if, for example, a metal oxide has mechanical properties similar to those of the parent element (or softer), in which case surface deformations do not crack the oxide film. The reason cold welding does not normally occur between metals on earth is because there is a very fine layer of oxidized metal due to the atmosphere. Even when a metal is put into a vacuum, this layer does not disappear without wire-brushing."

It is Greek to me, never seen it done.
 
Depending on what you are trying to do, either Advance or Autozone sell a product called "Thermosteel". It's a heat resistant/activated epoxy. I believe the catlylist is air. Even has a gritty texture to it and inexpensive. I wouldn't use it to join stuff together, but good for patching cracks/holes in cast.
