coleman drill

I was using this Coleman drill 18 volts to put in a new aluminum door and she got hot and let the magic smoke out. I took the battery off it and put it in the grass to cool tried it again and it made 20 revolutions and started to smoke again. Well this is going to the trash can. Can anybody recommend a good cheap drill for under $50

"Good" and "cheap" don't usually go together when talking about tools.
Maybe you can find a used DeWalt or Makita drill that still has some battery life left.

lots of times you can find an older style ryobi battery drill, on
Craigs list, in that price range. Batteries run about $30 at HD. Buy
the old batteries(yellow), they last longer than the lithium-ion
batteries, that are green.

I avoid all things made by Coleman. A house that I bought new came with a Coleman heat pump. After a couple years, it sprang a leak in the main coil. When I opened the unit, I noticed that the coil had been damaged by a forklift fork at the factory! Coleman shipped the unit that way; they wouldn't even answer my complaint letter.

I don't buy anything with the Coleman name on it.

I have two Harbor Freight battery operated drills. I bought the first one for $15.00 and thought I wanted a second battery. That second battery was $14.00, so I bought another drill, battery and power supply.

I have had absolutely no trouble with either. Kind of nice to have two so you don't need to change bits when drilling and screwing.

X4701 on no such thing as a "good cheap cordless drill."

I have had good luck with the Ryobi "One Plus" tools from Home Depot, though. They're about as cheap as you can get and still have some semblence of "good."

A starter set will run you around $80, which is a drill, lithium ion battery, and charger.

I recommend the lithium ion batteries because they hold a charge and last. The ones I have are 5+ years old now, from when they first came out, and they still work fine.

I have a Hitachi that I bought at Lowes, has been great for 7 years, rebuilding batteries now. Just looked online, new 18 volt about $80 with 2 batteries and a light, good deal.

Just the opposite in my experience. The Lithium far outlast the regular batteries. Are you using the proper charger on them? The latest dual charger will even recharge the old ones that their designated charger won't recharge. They still don't last long but you can get some more use out of them. My advice is DON'T buy the old yellow ones!
