Continental engine question

Hello everyone,

I'm a long time reader now it's time for me to dip into the well of knowledge. I have a Worthington Tractor that I am bringing back to life. It is powered by a Continental engine. I have an ID question that I cannot find the answer to anywhere (including the search function here).

The engine has F400A cast into the lower rear part of the block on the "passenger" side of the motor. I can access info on the web about the F400 motors..no problem there.

My question comes from the C291 that is cast into the front of the block on the "drivers" side of the machine. What does that mean? I'm trying to access the legendary tin plate with the motor specs on it, but I think it's either been removed or I have not gotten enough grime off of the machine to read it yet.

Any help would be appreciated in figuring this out. Also...who makes starters for these motors? Mine is beyond repair.

I hope you know those blocks can Be an F-124, F-140 or an F-162 engine. The tag you refered to is on the left side close to where the oil is poured in. Now as for starter, Not all take the same model starter although some are common. Do you have any numbers on your starter? The C-291 I need to look at a block. J.

Is there anyway you can take a pic? I have a Worthington and it has the 162 engine in it.Mine runs but could have a new set of bearings or oil pump put in it. Not a hard engine to find or get parts for.

I have a F162 Continental and the cylinder head casting # is: F401A363.

I had troubling identifying the engine until I matched up the valves and found out they differ between the F162 and F163.

My engine tag reads "Continental EPS364" and I've never been able to figure out where those numbers come from. I was told by a few people that "ESP" refers to "equipment power source" but I later found out that's not the case with this tag.

The starter on mine is a Delco and the distributor Prestolite.

Unfortunately as you can see in the photos the ID tag for this motor is long gone.

Are the distributors the same amongst the 124/140 and 162 motors? I need one for mine and want to make sure. I wish the ID plate was still there.
