Copper ribbon in distributor

I put new points in my 52 8N and when I tried to crank it, it would not start. I checked behind myself and could not figure out what the problem was. Then I noticed that the thin copper(?) ribbon inside the distributor (a wire runs from coil to side of distributor to ribbon inside distributor) looked to be twisted and "torn" on one side. I pushed the "torn" side back to its original position and my tractor cranked. I've noticed how fragile this ribbon is in the past and have worried about damaging it. I would like to replace it as I expect it to not crank when I need it most. Can this part be replaced? I looked in the Master Parts Catalog and do not see the ribbon. Is there a part number for it and where can I order another? Or is there a replacement part for this ribbon and where can I get one? Thanks for your help!

The copper conductor is available from CNH, Dennis Carpenter and (I believe) TISCO.

It is easily replaceable.

exactly what I did - use tin snips to get it to correct length then punch a hole in each end and connect up like the old one - works perfectly.

Use a bit of copper flashing.Punch the holes with a leather punch. It does not have to have the complex shape of the original part.Or the high cost of a new part. You could use copper braid if you have it.Just make two holes and apply a little solder.

Thanks for the replies guys! I will take a closer look at the ideas suggested and check websites for purchase of the new ribbon. Was confused by the Master Parts Catalog in that I did not see what appeared to be the copper ribbon. Thanks!

You can remove the small screw and nut on the side of the distributor and the copper strip. Run the wire through the grommet direct for the coil to the point stud screw inside the distributor. Put on a wire clip and you are direct wired without the copper stip. Works find.

It is best to discard the copper strip and the screw etc and run a wire to the points directly from the coil. Put a dab of silicone glue around the hole and you are good to go.

The insulators around that screw connection can give trouble too. Ground out when it goes bad.

ditto all the ideas from t he others.

I've done te wire.. I've done the flashing. all work.. eventhe strip fromt eh points.

I'd also made a ribbon from 1/4" copper pipe pounded flat.

whatever works.. works..

don't have to overthink this one. just needs to conduct electricity.

in a real pinch i have used calv-steel roof tin strip too. tractor ran.. I may have left it in there and not repalced it even. ;)

Guys, once again, thanks for the ideas and suggestions! Knowing what I know now, I can fix it and not have to wait on a part! Thanks!!
