Hey Dwight since no one seems to want to admit they have a Corn bore D I am going to ask the question I asked you the other day. How come the majority of the ones we know of are in the western part of the country? The corn bore s were in the east weren t they? Anybody with any info.?

"Corn Borer" is a term applied to 1350 tractors purchased by the US government for use in an worm eradication program in the late 1920's. 440 of the tractors were 1927 John Deere model D. Very few any of the tractors have survived. Tractors in the program had either a stencil or lettering designating "corn borer". The Sept-Oct 2012 issue of TWO-CYLINDER has a picture (page 10) of one in EXPO 22 this summer.

If any of you have a copy, and are interested, there is a very detailed account (reprinted from Farm Implement News, 3/24/27) of the entire program in the July/August 1997 issue of T-C. It is seven pages in length, and has some very interesting photos along with it. Two-Cylinder detail at it's best. Very interesting photo of a number of Deere's and McCormick's waiting for final assembly at a railyard. Tells all the serial numbers and where they were distributed. Goes into detail on all the supplies and manpower purchased by the government to erradicate the borer, down to 1294 Ford runabouts for supervisors, foremen, and inspectors. I believe I also read some article in GM of J.R.Hobbs' from back in the late 90's as well.
Worthwhile reading for sure, if you are into history and details.
Maybe someone could scan it and post it here?

This backs up what G.V.J is asking about the cornborer d on the east and west coast. I picked up #47674 in Connecticut. I picked up #47675 in New Mexico and #47126 came from California.

I had my BIL, who is here from England, photograph the article for me. I could e-mail it to you if you like. I would rather not post them here due to possible copyright issues.
For anyone who is a history or detail kind of junkie like myself, I highly recommend the CD's that T-C is now offering. It's the older magazines from 85-97 currently, and is one CD per year. It's just the feature articles, which leaves out some other good reading and info, but the feature articles are always packed with details. I've always had a sub. to the magazine, but for anyone who never had a subscription, it's a way to get some of the older stuff. I believe the CD's, and other DVD's they sell are all available online, and they have package deals.
Don't know if GM offers something similar, but any article of J.R.Hobbs is always packed with info.

I had a few chats with J.R Hobbs ...Rough old man but had spoken with and knew alot of inside people at deere. I think he said a group of the engineers from the plant would get together and have coffee together and he had met with them several times.
