Corn Head Grease

I have a gear box on my JD grindermixer on the bottom of the mixer that leaks. I read on here that it may be a canidate for corn head grease rather than the 90wt oil. Do I drain the oil out first or do I just pump the grease in with the oil? How will I know when I have enough grease in the gear box? It has a check plug in the side and I just add a cup or so of oil to that leval every 4 or 5 times I use it now. I have never used this type of grease but I wouldn't think I would want to pump the gear box full of it. I picked up a couple of cartrages of it at my I-H dealer and just trying to figure out how to go about it properly. Any helpful advice on the matter would be appreciated.

i dont remember what the name of the product is but deere sells a product that is inbetween grease and oil it is perfect for leaky gearboxes they actually recommend it for gear boxes on harley rakes that are prone to leaking. I use it in my bushhog and syckle bar mower.

You shouldn't have to drain the existing oil, and try to fill to the check plug level, add what you would normally add in 90 wt.

I wouldn't be concerned about whether to mix it or not, or even the amount. What I would be concerned about is finding an operable breather. Every agricultural gearbox application I've been into has a breather somewhere. And that's a problem, because they often get plugged with crud and/or corrosion.
I'm puzzled over the IH corn head grease? I didn't know they had/used it. I got a used CaseIH 1063 corn head last year, and it calls for a certain CaseIH # oil. When I looked into that I thought it turned out to be heavy gear oil.

I think the 2200 series and newer heads use cornhead grease in the boxes. The older IH heads use 80w90.

I have used corn head grease (heavy thick oil) on a number of old leaky gearboxes, works good.

I use caseIH corn head grease as we do no have a local JD dealer, but understand its the same stuff.


have known of some that just put regular grease in hay rake gearboxes, ran them for years with no problems.

My IH 900 operators manual shows SAE 180 for the gear boxes.

You may want to look at one of the discussions on the Farmall board, where several guys report good results using corn head grease in the notoriously leaky Farmall offsets' steering box:

cotton picker grease is a option, deere sells it also IH

i use ford model a trans oil it is 400w. there are no seals in a model a trans. but don't drain it mix it 400w need to be heated up to get it out of the bottle in augest in iowa.
