open pollinated means there is no crossing of breeds to obtain a hybrid. Conventional corn would be hybrid corn that does not have a genetically-modified trait, like glyphosate tolerance or embedded bacillus Thuringiensis, etc. Now with genetic engineering, the seed/chemical companies are stacking on genetic traits, like hybrids that have resistance to more than one herbicide, insect resistance, higher sugar content, etc, all in one plant. Of course, this means $$$ more per bag for the seed. I have found that if you don't have warm, corn-belt black dirt, most of the added traits don't pay their extra expense back in yield. Our clay soils have a lot lower yield ceiling, and it just doesn't let the corn take full advantage of all the engineering.

several people told me their refuge corn (conventional or RR non BT) was their best corn last year, this was my experience also, monsanto has everyone brainwashed that we must plant triple or smartstack corn or we won't get a crop, just planted a bunch or 958 Prairie Brand conv. corn yesterday.
