correct battery for Ford 2000

Tractor just has a standerd car battery, want to price out original heavey cranking battery. What cranking capacity and size would an oem battery be for this tractor?

3 or 4 cylinder, gas or diesel? If a 3-cylinder ('65 or newer) diesel, it would be a 4DLT. Probably around $130. (but it's been a while since I bought one)

Gas would be a 17TF - always wondered if TF was for "Tractor Ford." They are expensive - $170 or so and about the only place I could find one was at NAPA (NH dealer didn't have them in stock). Not a great deal, but if you want it to fit the tray exactly that's the one.

you can buy a "tractor" battery or buy a car battery. both work about the same.

tractor batterys do allow longer storage so if a tractor sits 6 months, it has the reserve to start. However they dont necessary last longer.

So.. lots of folks just buy a regular cheap battery that works very well and lasts just as long and works just as well at half the price. remember it a 3 cyl engine and the car battery is made to start 4 cy and 8 cyls.

Just be careful if you're using a car type battery, as a lot of car batteries are too tall and the top posts can short out against the underside of the hood on the 3 cylinders. I switched mine to a 850 CCA side terminal battery and switched out the battery cables with ones that had the screw in type side terminal connectors. It looks tiny in that battery tray, but it starts the tractor on the first crank every time, and it's lasted me for almost 5 years now. I put a battery tender on it for a few days at a time, a couple of weeks apart over the winter.

I used a group 65 850 CCA on my 3 cyl diesel. That should start your gas tractor with lots to spare. They can be had for less than $100. Only thing is I don't know about hood clearance on your tractor. I used this in place of a 4DLT, so it should work for you as well.

I had to buy a new one last fall. I got it at our local farmers co-op and I think it was around $125.00. Expensive, but it fits perfectly.

Agree. I use a Group 65 to start my 3 cyl 4000 that was converted from gas to Diesel. I had to keep the gas battery tray due to the modified intake piping. The gas battery tray needed minor mods, but the battery fits (including hood clearance) and rolls the 201D over nicely. The battery I chose fits most Ford 7.3L PowerStrokes.

i'd get the 4dlt, it's not much more $ than a good car battery .. plus counts as half the ballast you need..

That's true!... I think they're around 110 pounds... but wouldn't fit a gasser's tray.

I dread replacing the one in my 5000.. have to put it ont he tailgat of the truck then get under it with my shoulder to lift it up on the tray.

I think I'f using a group 27? in my 7610S It has about 1/4" clearance from bat posts to hood.. so I tossed an old rubber innertube over the top of the bat posts and zip tied it there...

starts it good.. just not too many extra reserve minutes if it doesn't want to start..

The correct battery BCI group is 17TM and they are difficult to find and expensive to buy. New Holland's part number is F120DSW and suggested list is $201.
That price must be somewhat competitive for that EXACT battery, as I sell 5 or 6 per year and always stock one.

i bet you a mtp-78dt (interstate) will fit in there.

I always keep one in the barn for a spare tractor battery.. fits most trucks, including my powerstrokes.. has dual terminals, so in a pinch I can toss it into the wifes yukon if needed.

good hefty 1000a/800cca battery..
we stock them at work.. pretty commonly used battery apparrently.

Reserve minutes shouldn't be a big issue in FL, as long as the engine is in good shape. Sure can be here though. Just changed the one in the 7000 two weeks ago... but I 'borrowed' the one from the 4600. 4600 will get a new battery once it's back together. Same battery in the TW, but at least that one has the battery just above knee level behind the right steps. Would hate to have to lift it above the engine on that one. 5 tractors, 2 battery sizes... keeps it simple.

pretty mucht he same here.. all the diesels except the 7610s take a 4dlt, and all the others take a 78dt.. that leaves the 6v'ers on a 1vhd

so 3 bats for me, and of the 78's I can swap em with my trucks if needed..

Bought it at Spring Charlotte from the blem battery guy a couple of years ago. Supposedly less prone to vibration like a tractor can see compared to most cars. Not cheap but i think well worth the extra dollars.

Since latest comment is dated March 6,2012, I’ll update with what I’ve found to be the lowest price for a 17tf battery for the correct size battery for this tractor: $337.99+ $10.00 refundable core! So dig deep folks! I’ll be looking for a “cheaper” battery since other vendors wanted $400-500 for their battery! Good luck in your search!
