What is the right brand and color for the headlight, generator and axles on a 1952 50, and what kind and shade for the gas cap and radiator cap, thanks 2 cylinder

and where is a good place to get the JOHN DEERE badge for the nose, seems like all the reproductions are junk that i have bought from steiner and various suppliers

The original color of the generator was black. It was installed as received from Delco-Remy. The lights were also black. Some like to use a gloss black on them but I use medium gloss black from Deere and they look pretty good. The axles were never painted from the factory but some use flat black on them or clear coat. But the only paint on them from the factory was probably no more than a slight amount of overspray. The radiator cap was originally green and so was the gas cap. However, it is my understanding (not confirmed) that when the fuel filler was moved to the front corner of the hood that the gas caps became red then. I know the later 20 series tractors have red caps. I have a 1954 70 that appeared to have the original cap on it when I got it and you could see trace amounts of red on it. The earlier tractors had the filler at the rear of the tank with the "buy clean fuel-keep it clean" writing on it and these caps were green. Hope this helps some. Mike

I have to disagree on the axle coloring, at least on some models. We still have my grandpa's first year 60 that until a total every bolt out restoration about 4 years ago, was completely original other than tires. It had never been repainted and every bit of the paint showed its age, but the axles on it were definately painted yellow just as the hubs were. This tractor was early enough it had the hubs with the holes in the outer perimeter.

Saw a 1953 "60" that showed signs of yellow on the end of the axles so they could have been yellow from the factory. Seen them painted silver and black for appearance and both look nice.

Did read an article one time that said everything was painted green at Deere except the head lights and wheels including the muffler. Might have been the two-cylinder magazine if anyone has it. Picture showed the tractor, looked like an early 60, going through the painting process with steel wheels and the muffler clearly on the tractor. Nothing was taped off so if the generator was on it it was painted green.

Prefere mine black, generator and muffler, as it looks nice.

The headlights were not on the tractor. They were always painted black as received from the vendor. Axles were never painted, even on the ends. Mike

I ordered a replacement gas cap for mine based on serial number from John Deere and it didn't fit the filler neck on my tractor. Ended up buying one from Stieners that was pre painted red and it fit perfectly. It's also a different shape.

John Deere red would be fine. I used John Deere's semi gloss black on my lights, generator(not the btackets though) and muffler. The muffler burnt the paint off so i switched to a high temp flat back to see how well this works.

Painted axles silver to imitate metal that was just turned although flat black looks good. Yellow I saw on the end of the axles could have been overspray or a test area for someone trying to match the yellow color. I just know it shows yellow paint.
