cost to paint

I was given an estimate of $700 to paint my IH 340 utility. This included very minimal body work, primer and caseih 2150 paint. He does very nice work and is a friend of mine. Does that sound adequate?

I agree that's a good price too. I know of a guy around here who wants $1000 and you buy all the paint. Good friend of mine gets around $1400+ depending on the tractor and the type of paint. All depends on what kind of job you want, but if you're paying $700 and it's just a tractor you use and want it to look good I'd say haul it to him and let him get started.

I agree on the good work part.

If all he does is power wash it clean and starts spraying paint you'd be better off not letting him near it at any price.

If he wet sands the entire tractor, removes decals, and takes care of the rims too for that price you are gettign a pretty good deal.

What is wrong with just power washing it clean and painting it. There really isn"t much more to do is it? (besides sandblasting)

Oh ok. Well I was planning on wire brushing it instead of sanding it since the tractor isn't 1 smooth piece (which would make it easier to sand). Would that be sufficient?? After that is done, I am going to wash it with the pressure washer (no soap), and wipe it down with gasoline to clean any kind of dirt or grease remaining. That is what I have grown up seeing done by paint and body shops years ago.

Do not wipe down with gasoline before painting!!!!!
Gas being petroleum based...your paint will not stick. If you do make sure you have a ton of wax and grease remover.

Years ago, I was told by auto body and paint shops to do that. I remember when places would paint cars and to clean the surface, they would wipe it down with gas.

Gasoline doesnt mix with acrylic enamel. Your paint will not adhere properly and will result in fisheyes. Wax and grease remover is the only way to go. If i saw aprofessional body shop rubbing my car down in gas I would be greatly concerned. Gas should never be used as a solvent.

What are "fisheyes"?? Also, what do you all mean by using wax to clean/prep the surface? Pictures would be helpful. THANKS>

Basically it is oil or silicone contaminates in the air or on the surface before putting a top coat on your project.

Fish Eyes " Crater-shaped indentations with raised edges.
Cause:
• Substrate was not thoroughly cleaned with silicone
remover.
• Air supply was contaminated with oil or water.
• Ceiling filter does not meet the requirements.
Prevention:
• Ensure that regular maintenance is carried out on the
compressed air lines.
• Ensure that the filter is changed regularly (secondary
filter once a year, primary filter every three months).
• Thoroughly clean surface with silicone remover
before respraying.
Remedy:
• Sand the paint surface, clean with silicone remover
and then apply the top coat again.

lacquer thinner will cut grease, evaporate and not leave a film. Just make sure it is dry when you apply the paint.

I had a Farmall Cub sandblasted, and powder coated for $1200.00 and that thing looks friggin awesome. I had to tear it down, but they did the blasting and powder coat. That thing is so shinny and red and for the price, cant be beat.

Cost me $500 and a small block chevy 3 deuce intake manifold with the carbs. And that was only for the sheetmetal on my JD A. I had to prep and dissassemble the rest of the tractor, primer it, wet sand it, tape it off, and have it clean and ready for the guy to come paint it at my house for another $200. But it looks great!

If it is done right, I wouldn't even think of painting one for less than $1500.
