County Fair Heavy Stock Pulling

After reading the post about the G1000, I was also wondering the feasibility of pulling a good running rebuilt G1000 in "Farm Stock" at the fair. It is different than our antique farm stock classes in that usually M&W turbos and various dealer stock parts are allowed. At a 5mph speed limit, I can see how it could be quite competitive and turbo diesel power could really be cranked up for the event. There are fairs that allow all kinds of engine stuff but limit tractors to original cast wheel centers and functioning three point, no cut tires, etc. There are others that allow sheet metal centers and stripped models, but limit engines to factory stuff. I'm am antique light weight puller at heart and not that bad at it. I'm going to give it a try this year with the G1000 that seems to run healthy. Probably no chance against anything with a turbo. I also have a G900 gasoline with sheet metal rims and M&W hubs, not too mention some dynamite 18.4X38 Radials and various sharp wore big tires. It's a perfect candidate for some serious power. HD800? D585? Can anyone tell me their knowledge of running Farm Stock or even Hot Farm 8500#, 10,000#, 12,000#? Speed limits? Horsepower? Tires? All opinions, stories, and experiences welcome!

I do not think at 5 mph they would need a drop sled or that it will make much difference.I have been to pulls that run 4mph and blower tractors with 500 plus horse and 20.8 38 tires pull against na tractors with 18.4 tires that have maybe 160 horse and the na's won the class. The most powerful tractor does not always win, a lot of other things matter. A 1000 should compete at 5 mph. Good luck

With a speed limit the extra power the others with turbos have is not nearly as helpful as long as you can maintain the pace to keep the sled moving as fast as everyone else. At some local fairs with 3mph pace classes we've won 10-14,000 with our M against 1066's and the like, and we've won 7-9,000 with our H against turboed 666's and some larger stripped down tractors. Assuming you can keep pace.... traction, balance, and reading the track are the keys to winning a pace class regardless of the weight.

There was an M that won the 16,000 mph class a few years back at a local fair that only weighted around 15,000, but he was perfectly balanced and had the right part of the track. A 1066 should be able to balance in a 16,000 lb class, but most of those guys like to get throttle and torque happy near the end of the pull and end up spinning themselves loose from of a good hook because of TOO MUCH horsepower (in my opinion).

I think the G1000 or any big cube Naturally Aspirated Diesel would compete if it is a speed limit. A few years back a guy with an 880 oliver ran 2nd in 10,000lb class out of 26 tractors, 1066s, 4020s etc..I am guessing he had a 310 diesel bored, stroked, and some head & pump work. I like the G1000 cause there is a lot of potential for big cubes and still farm with it, and is cheaper HP. At the end of the day it is still balance and putting the power to the ground.

A hd 800 would be nice. 250 hp stock. I think it would own a 12000 lb 5 mph class. Complete 800 engines aren't that high. A friend of mine is putting a 800 HD in a 1355. It is a factory turbo engine. It is the only one I ever saw. I guess it is really a altitude compensator for 5000 ft and above. It also has low voltage plug wires.(it has a coil for every cylinder). Vic
