Cracked Block Question

I was showing my 9N which is for sale and the guy pointed out it had a cracked block. I had noticed it before but thought it was just a rough place on the casting. It"s about 2 and 1/2 inches long on the left side by a drain valve. I know it has been there every since I brought the tractor in 1997 and has never leaked. Well today it looked damp in the center of the cracked area. We ran it for about 10 minutes and drove it around and it never leaked any just the same amount of dampness in that one area. Should I try to fix this crack with JB weld or not worry about it? It doesn"t loose any coolant and runs fine.

There"s and old saying fix it now and don"t be sorry. I have had good luck with JB weld but there is better, someone will give you more names, when you sell it make sure the buyer knows". Good Luck!!

Drain the block then drill the ends of the crack to stop it from spreading. "V" out the crack with a grinder and fill with JB. Let it set at least 24 hours or more if not warm. Cooling system is only 5 or so pounds of pressure so the JB will hold. There are a lot of block in use with patches as your will have.

This area of the block (left side between drain plug and starter) is an extremely common place for cracks on the N block. If it's not drip-drip-dripping, it probably will never hurt a thing. Just check the antifreeze level in the radiator once in a while and it probably will be OK. You could mess with veeing it and using JB Weld, but that also might risk opening the crack up more. I've also seen such cracks brazed, cast welded, stitched, each solution carrying its own risk. Your call.

My 52 has had a 10" JB stitch for about 40 years. No problems.

Drilled ends, veed out the crack w grinder, filled w JB Weld. Still holding after 9 years.
