crankshaft gear

I have removed the crankshaft from my B to have it repaired, upon examening the crank I noticed a hair line crack in the crank gear in line with the keyway. It must have cracked when it was installed 1n 1948. I cant get a new one [obsolete]so I guess Ill keep running it that way. Both gears still look like new. Has anyone seen this happen before? Please respond.------ Harold.

With all those B's around for parts and that being a rare occurance it should be easy to find a used one. Why would one knowingly put a cracked gear back in ? I know a guy that screwed one of those gears up when he had the end play too tight.

I can say that I have never heard of that happening. The majority of the problems that I have heard of are with the splines on the crank and the gears wearing out. I know of a salvage yard that would probably have what you are looking for if you are intrested.

Thanks gentlemen, I live in Saskatchewan Canada where JB Bs are as scarce as hens teeth, there are few in the salvage yards. I have the only B that I know of but I am sure there are some.I also have restored a A. We had a lot of ARs and a few BRs but Bs are scarce. I will have to try across the U.S. border but most dont like to ship to Canada. Thanks -------Harold

Harold, B"s here in central Illinois are as common as spring rain. Check out Two Cylinder Plus Salvage, Conway Mo., 417-589-3337, (there on the web also). Those folks are great and they will ship to anywhere. Now my question for you. I HAVE AN AR, AND I CANNOT FIND PARTS FOR IT HERE! I need the whole cross section of the front axle. Mine is broke on the left hand side about half way between the spindle and the center of the axle. Do you have and suggestions?

johndeerjon, Whitch AR do you have, the styled or the unstyled? I would take the axel to a good welder or machine shop and have it welded, I have seen them weld a front axel for JD 80 with nickel rod and it is still holding. this was at least 20 years ago. the guy ran it into a tree stump. the 80 axel is much heavier than the AR. I wish you were closer, I would trade you an axel for a gear. Thanks for the info, I will phone Two Cylinder Monday.-------Harold

Styled. It's going to be years before I get around to restoring it. I have to much on my plate right now. I haven't really been looking for one, but I thought if I could find one for cheap.........I will probably have to have mine fixed when I get around to it.
